Designing-a-Small-Bathroom

If you have a smaller bathroom that you want to update or design, there are a few important things you should consider during your planning process. First, you need to establish if you will be taking on the project yourself or hiring a professional.

Measure and Position Planning

Are you updating an existing bathroom space with new items or completely redesigning the layout? If you're wanting to move things around, you need to make sure that it is possible with your existing plumbing locations.

If your bathroom doesn’t have a window, then create as much light as possible through good quality lighting and the use of a mirror to reflect any light, natural or artificial that you do have around the room.

Storage


Storage is one of the most important factors to consider in any bathroom, especially if you're lacking in space.

By using clever storage solutions, you can hide away any clutter you don't want on show, keeping your bathroom looking neat and tidy.

  • Utilise an unused wall by installing wall mounted shelving or a wall hung cabinet to store your bottles and toothbrushes. You can even opt for a mirrored cabinet to combine your bathroom mirror with useful additional storage.
  • Instead of a pedestal sink, select a vanity unit with drawers or doors to give you a fantastic storage space, we have both floor standing and wall mounted options to choose from.
  • Shower caddies are a fantastic way of keeping your bath edge or shower tray free of clutter and giving you a dedicated area to store your shampoo and shower gel.
  • Install a heated towel radiator for a handy place to hang your towels!
Reduced-Depth


The items you choose for your bathroom will make the biggest impact on your bathroom space.

By opting for a vanity or toilet with reduced depth or width, your bathroom will feel less overcrowded and more comfortable to move around.

Utilise-Corners


Make the most of the space you have.

Corner sinks and vanity units are perfect for utilising a wasted corner in your bathroom, with plenty of styles to choose from with the added benefit of further storage solutions.

Combination


If you haven't got enough space in your bathroom for a separate shower, then a shower bath is an excellent alternative. By installing a shower above and pairing with a shower screen, you can turn one end of your bath into a dedicated showering area.

A great way to save on space is by choosing a 2-in-1 toilet basin combination unit. The basin is cleverly mounted above the cistern to give you a sleek all in one, and removing the need for a separate sink.

Lighting


Lighting is imperative in a smaller bathroom, as it helps elevate the feel of the room by brightening everything up.

Mirrors are an excellent way to give the illusion of more space, as they reflect off the room and help bounce both artificial and natural light around the room.

Along with your bathroom ceiling lights, you can also opt for a mirror with built in LED lighting as it will give you a great space to get ready and provide fantastic mood lighting.

What are the benefits of a wall-hung vanity versus a freestanding unit in a small bathroom, and which should you choose?

Wall-hung units (available in common widths like 400mm and 500mm) free up visible floor space so the room feels larger and make floor cleaning easier, while freestanding vanities (also offered in 400–620mm widths) give you built-in storage and a more traditional look. If your soil pipe and plumbing can be hidden in the wall, a 500mm wall-hung like the Regis Forma or Artis wall-hung range will maximise space. If you need plumbing to remain exposed or want extra cupboard depth, a freestanding 500–600mm unit such as the Regis Forma freestanding or Artis freestanding will give more internal storage. For a narrow cloakroom under 1 m wide, a 400–500mm wall-hung is usually the best way to preserve circulation.

How do toilets with sinks on top work and are they practical for a cloakroom?

Many 2‑in‑1 units combine a basin directly above the cistern in a compact 500mm width, such as the Affine Tivoli and Artis back‑to‑wall models, so you get handwashing without a separate basin. The basin water is commonly routed into the cistern for flushing, which saves space and reduces water use compared with installing two separate fittings. They work especially well in very small cloakrooms or ensuites where you want a tidy footprint and quick handwash access. Note you still get normal toilet comfort because these are full toilets with soft‑close seats on some models.

I'm short on floor area, should I choose a small straight bath, an L‑shaped shower bath, or a corner bath?

A straight small bath (1700 x 700mm) is the most space‑efficient if you need a regular bath and a narrow run of floor. If you want a shower over the bath, consider a shower bath or an L‑shaped shower bath (examples shown at 1700 x 850mm or 1700 x 850mm with screen) to give a deeper showering area at one end. A corner bath such as the Affine Montpellier 1510 x 905mm uses corner space to give a larger bathing area while freeing wall length for a vanity or towel rail. For a really compact ensuite, a corner bath or a shower bath with an included shower screen (bundles like the Ceramica 1700 x 700mm with screen) can deliver the best mix of bathing and showering without crowding the room.

What vanity width and basin type should I buy for a small cloakroom or ensuite?

In very small cloakrooms, work with 400–500mm widths; there are many 400mm and 500mm options such as Artis 400mm fluted units and Regis 500mm units. You can opt for an integrated basin (common in freestanding and cloakroom vanity units) to save depth, or a countertop basin on a 500–600mm unit if you prefer a design statement like the Regis countertop with Roubaix basin. For an ensuite where you want more storage, choose 560–600mm freestanding units which offer deeper drawers and compartments while still fitting most narrow rooms. A practical example: a 500mm wall‑hung unit with an integrated basin keeps the toilet and door swing unobstructed in a tight cloakroom.

Which finishes work best in small bathrooms to maximise the feeling of space and durability?

White gloss finishes reflect light and open up a small space, which is why many 400–600mm vanities come in white gloss; pair one with a Roubaix white basin for a bright, cohesive look. Wood and fluted wood finishes add warmth and texture without reducing perceived space, the Artis fluted wood units with brass or black handles give character while keeping a compact footprint. Dark finishes such as anthracite or black make a strong statement but can show water marks more readily, so they suit you if you want drama and are happy with a little extra wipe‑down.
