How do I know whether you need an angled, straight or corner radiator valve?

Look at how your pipework reaches the radiator. Angled valves (27 included in our range) are for side-inlet radiators with pipework coming from below or for bottom-inlet radiators with pipework coming from the wall; straight valves (7 included in our range) suit side-inlet radiators with pipework running along the wall or bottom-inlet radiators with pipework coming from the floor; corner valves are for side-inlet radiators with pipework coming from the wall or bottom-inlet pipework running along the wall. if the supply comes up from the floor beneath the radiator, a straight valve is usually correct; if the pipe comes out of the wall just below the radiator, pick an angled valve.

Should you go for a thermostatic, manual or smart valve?

Thermostatic valves are the most common here and let you set the radiator temperature automatically, saving energy and keeping rooms comfortable, so they are a sensible default. Manual valves (only three shown) are cheaper but require you to adjust them by hand and are best for simple installations or where you want a fixed flow. A smart TRV, such as the Hive options included in our range (the current product price), gives remote control and scheduling if you already use smart heating and want zone control.

What connection size do you need, 8mm, 10mm or 15mm?

Measure the outside diameter of your pipe or check the size stamped on your existing valve tail; 15mm is the most common here and fits standard central-heating copper pipework. Use 10mm or 8mm only if your pipes are smaller or for certain designer towel rails and compact systems; many bathroom towel radiators use 10mm tails, while larger panel radiators generally use 15mm.

What does "lockshield included" mean and do you need it?

A lockshield controls the radiator's return flow so you can balance the system; 20 products include a lockshield and 12 do not. If you are replacing both ends of a valve pair or fitting a new radiator, buy a pack that includes the lockshield to get a matched set ready to fit. If you only need to replace the thermostatic head and the existing lockshield is fine, you can save money by buying the valve without a new lockshield.

Which finish and style will best match your radiator and décor?

Most valves in this range are modern in style and white in finish, which suits contemporary white panel radiators and towel rails; chrome options are limited but work well with polished designer radiators and chrome fittings. For a modern bathroom with a white towel rail, a white Honeywell or Danfoss thermostatic valve (from around the current product price) will blend in; if you have a polished chrome designer radiator, opt for a chrome RAS-D2 or similar to match the rest of your fittings.
