What are cloakroom suites?

These suites consists of a toilet and wash asin and is sometimes confusingly referred to by the bathroom industry as a '4 piece' sanitaryware pack. The four pieces are the toilet pan and cistern (what we refer to as a toilet), the wash basin and pedestal stand (what we refer to as the sink or basin). They can be matched with either a bath or shower enclosure to form the main bathroom suite, or fitted in a separate room to act like an ensuite.

Do I have to have a toilet and a basin?

One of these suites is generally a cloakroom toilet and basin combined but they don't have to be your ordinary basin and pedestal. Its just as cheap to opt for a contemporary or traditional vanity unit to go with your toilet or even get a toilet with a concealed cistern to match.

Are cloakroom suites affordable?

Cloakroom suites are certainly cheap when compared with a full bathroom suite. They're designed for smalled spaces so normally come in compact sizes to suit. They're available in a whole host of different designs from the standard close coupled toilet with pedestal to the increasingly common cloakroom toilet and basin vanity units.

What size cloakroom suite should I choose if your WC is very small?

For a tight cloakroom, aim for compact pieces such as short-projection toilets and small basins in the 300–399 mm or 400–499 mm range; many space-saving options and 2-in-1 toilet-and-sink units are designed around a 500 mm footprint. A wall-hung basin or a toilet with a sink on top will free floor area and make the room feel bigger. a 500 mm toilet-with-sink unit gives hygiene and handwashing without the depth of a full vanity. If you have a little more room, a slim vanity from the 500–599 mm band adds some storage without overwhelming the space.

What's the difference between back-to-wall, close-coupled and wall-hung toilets, and which is best for your room?

Close-coupled toilets have the cistern attached to the pan and suit conventional plumbing and very compact layouts; they're simple and widely available. Back-to-wall toilets hide pipework behind a unit or furniture run and look neat when paired with a vanity, many suites here combine back-to-wall toilets with integrated basins. Wall-hung toilets lift the pan off the floor so cleaning is easier and the room looks larger, but they need a concealed carrier frame in the wall. If you want built-in storage and a streamlined look, back-to-wall with a vanity is a sensible choice; for maximum floor space and a modern feel, wall-hung is the move if your walls can accept a carrier.

Can you have storage in a cloakroom suite, and what sizes and finishes are common?

Yes, vanity units are the most common storage option and come in widths from compact 500–599 mm right up to 1,820 mm for larger runs.
