Are PVC wall panels a good alternative to tiles?

For a lot of people, yes. They're one of the most affordable ways to get a clean, waterproof finish, and because they go up as large sheets with no grout, you avoid the cost, mess, and ongoing upkeep of tiling. Installation is far quicker too, which keeps labour costs down if you're hiring a fitter. Tiles still edge ahead on premium feel and design range, but for a smart, budget-friendly refresh, PVC panels are hard to beat on value.

Are PVC panels durable, or do they feel cheap?

Quality has come a long way. Modern PVC panels are tougher and more rigid than the flimsy versions people remember, and the printed finishes look far more convincing. They won't rot, swell, or harbour mould, which is a real advantage in damp rooms. That said, they are lighter and more impact-prone than a solid laminate panel, so in a high-traffic or knock-prone spot it's worth considering a thicker panel or stepping up the range. For most bathrooms and utility areas, they hold up brilliantly.

Where can I use them and are there any spots to avoid?

They're brilliant for bathrooms, shower areas, utility rooms, and even ceilings, thanks to how light and easy to handle they are. The one thing to be mindful of is direct, concentrated heat. PVC can soften or distort near a heat source, so they're not suited to going directly behind a hob or right next to a flame. For everyday damp and steam, though, they're completely at home.

How easy are they to fit myself?

Very. this is a genuinely popular DIY job. Because the panels are so lightweight, you can handle and position them solo without much fuss, and they cut cleanly with a fine-tooth saw or even a sharp knife and straight edge. They join with tongue-and-groove edges or trims, and can be glued to a flat, dry wall or fixed to battens. Take your time sealing around edges, taps, and joints, and you'll get a neat, watertight result.

How do I clean and maintain them?

This is the easy part. A wipe with a soft cloth and warm soapy water keeps them looking fresh, and with no grout lines there's nowhere for grime or mould to build up. Avoid abrasive scourers and harsh solvents, which can scratch or dull the surface. That's really all there is to it no sealing, no special products, just the occasional wipe-down.
