What exactly are basin pillar taps and how do they differ from other tap types?

Basin pillar taps are sold as a pair, with one tap for hot water and one for cold, so you control temperature by mixing at the basin rather than at a single spout. They tend to be deck mounted on the basin or countertop, although there are a few wall-mounted options. Unlike single-lever or mixer taps, you won't get blended water from one spout, which suits period bathrooms or where you want a symmetrical look. If you want a single outlet with instant mixed water, a mixer or single-lever tap would be a better match.

How do I know if a pillar tap will work with my water pressure?

Look at the pressure suitability: many pillar taps on offer are labelled suitable for all systems, meaning they'll work with combi boilers, mains pressure and gravity systems; there are also specific low pressure options (0.1–0.4 bar) and medium pressure options (0.5–0.9 bar). If you have a gravity-fed hot water cylinder you should choose one of the taps marked low pressure, whereas a combi-boiler or high-pressure system will accept taps marked suitable for all systems. Ten models here are suitable for all systems, while two are rated low pressure and four medium.

Which finish and style will suit my bathroom, chrome, black or brushed brass?

Chrome is the most versatile option and is the dominant finish here, with various chrome choices that blend with any décor and match most accessories. If you want a modern contrast, a matt black Malmo model works well with white basins and dark tiles, while brushed brass brings warmth and pairs beautifully with natural timber or muted stone. For instance, the Architeckt Malmo is available in brushed brass and matt black if you want a contemporary, bold look rather than a classic chrome finish.

Should I choose deck-mounted or wall-mounted pillar taps for my basin?

Most pillar taps on our site are deck mounted, which suits standard basins and countertop installations where the taps sit on the rim or vanity top. Wall-mounted taps are the cleaner option for vessel basins or when you want an uncluttered basin rim, but only three wall-mounted pillar options are listed so you'll have fewer styles to choose from. If you have a countertop basin that sits above the worktop, a wall-mounted tap can give a spa-like look; for inset basins, stick with a deck-mounted model.

How do I choose between cross head, lever or push-button controls?

Cross head taps suit traditional bathrooms and provide precise control, while single or twin levers give quicker, easier temperature adjustment and a more contemporary look. Push-button or anti-vandal outlets are practical in commercial or high-use areas where you want to restrict run time. If you're fitting a classic Victorian-style cloakroom choose cross head taps; for a modern family bathroom where speed and ease matter, a single-lever or twin-lever pair will be more convenient.
