It is crucial that everyone is able to find a bathroom with useable features, wherever they go, whatever their physical handicaps. Since the introduction of the Equality Act 2010 and the Care Act in 2014, it is has been an obligation that businesses provide accessible utilities for their employees and customers. An accessible bathroom needs to be suitable for use by the majority of independent wheelchair users and will provide enough space for a carer if needed. Grab rails and emergency alarms are required, in order to make the toilet usable for as many people as possible.

DOC M is short for Document M. A DOC M pack is a package which includes a set of bathroom products for the disabled and less abled which is up-to-date with the latest building regulations and is specially designed so the user has maximum comfort when using it. Here at plumbworld, we offer a large range of packs so that a choice can be easily made to get the pack that will be suitable for most. They include a toilet which is BS8300 compliant, meaning it is at a raised height to facilitate easy access for wheelchair users. These packs will also include a washbasin and taps that are easy to operate and all the grab rails to comply.

Toilet and Basin Options

An accessible toilet is specially designed to accommodate people with physical disabilities. A person with reduced mobility find them useful, as do those with weaker legs – the higher bowl makes it easier for them to stand up. In order to install an accessible toilet, you’ll need to make some additional measurements to add accessibility providing more space for a wheelchair and grab bars for easy access to and from the toilet seat – you will also need to ensure there is enough room for a possible caregiver.

Each of our basins which we supply in our DOC M packs are the perfect size for hand washing. When installing a basin mixer to your washbasin, you need to ensure that it's installed nearest to the WC – this will facilitate easier personal hygiene for the user, allowing them to rinse their hands from a seated position.

The Different Type of Grab Rails...

Straight Rails

These are wall-fixed rails which run either vertically, horizontally or at an incline or angle. Horizontal rails may be helpful when pushing up from the toilet and provide support when lowering. Vertical rails may assist when pulling up into a standing position or for just helping to maintain balance. Rails can also be set at an angle to help a person who needs steadying support. The rail can be set at a 45-degree angle (this keeps the user's wrist in a natural position) making them the perfect choice for those with weak or painful arms or wrists to support his/her forearm on the rail whilst pushing up.

Wall-Mounted Drop-Down Grab Rails

More often than not drop-down rails are installed into the wall nowadays and are a common choice in commercial and public washrooms. The double rail offers two support points when sitting on the toilet. Due to the hinged arm, you can fold-up or fold down the rail to access or leave the WC. Some rails include a support leg which rests down on the floor when the rail is placed horizontally. Rails can be lifted up and out of the way can be very useful for wheelchair users and those who could use a hoist.

Preformed Angled Rails

These handy rails are wall fixed and feature an -n-built angle. The lower portion is set horizontally and acts as forearm support, thus allowing the user's body weight to be evenly distributed through their forearm – making it a helpful purchase for those with painful hands or wrists.

How do I pick the right type of Doc M pack for my bathroom layout and daily needs?

Start by matching the pack format to your space and how you move — wall-hung packs free up floor space and give you easier wheelchair or knee clearance, back-to-wall packs hide the cistern for a neat look in tighter bathrooms, and close-coupled or low-level packs suit more traditional layouts. If you need seated showering or more grab points, look at the shower-specific Doc M packs such as the Fitzroy Style Shower options. Think about the basin mounting too: most packs offer wall-hung basins which save space and make transferring easier. Pick a pack whose projection and pan width suit your room so grab rails and turning space work in practice.

What toilet height should I choose for comfort and safer transfers?

Most Doc M packs on offer favour raised pans, with many models in the 450–499 mm height range, which is ideal for ambulant users because it reduces the effort of sitting and standing. If you have a taller user or severe mobility issues you might opt for a higher pan where available; conversely, the smaller 250–349 mm pans suit users who need a lower seat. Check the specific pan height listed for the pack — for example most Fitzroy and Twyford Doc M packs specify the pan height so you can match it to your needs. A quick practical check is to sit on a similar-height chair to see how comfortable transfers feel.

Do I need hinged grab rails, fixed rails or a backrest?

Hinged rails fold away which helps in tight bathrooms or when a carer needs space, while fixed rails give constant, solid support and are generally simpler and robust. A backrest (found in some packs labelled Grab Rails and Back Rest) gives additional trunk support when seated, helpful if you tire easily or need to lean back. If you want both flexibility and support look for packs that combine hinged rails with a backrest; several Fitzroy and Ideal Standard packs offer those configurations.

Which grab-rail finish and colour should I choose for hygiene and visibility?

Stainless steel or metal finishes are hard-wearing and easy to clean — many Style and luxury packs offer satin stainless steel rails — while coloured rails (blue, grey, black, white) provide strong visual contrast against tiles, which helps users with sight loss; the range shows several blue and grey options. Concealed fixings create a cleaner, more hygienic appearance and are easier to wipe down, whereas exposed fixings (seen on some Fitzroy PRO packs) can be more economical and straightforward to service. Think about your priorities: pick stainless steel with concealed fixings for a sleek, low-maintenance solution, or a coloured rail for better visual definition.

Should I buy a rimless toilet pack or a standard toilet pack?

Rimless toilets, available in several Twyford and Fitzroy Doc M packs, remove the inner rim and therefore reduce dirt traps and make cleaning quicker and more hygienic. Standard-rim pans are often cheaper and still perfectly functional, but they need more careful cleaning around the rim. If cleanliness and ease of maintenance are important — for example in a care setting or if you want minimal upkeep — choose a rimless Doc M pack such as the Twyford Avalon rimless options. If budget is tighter and you clean regularly, a conventional pan in a PRO pack will still meet accessibility needs.
