What is Silverline PTFE tape and when should you use it?

Silverline PTFE tape is a non-adhesive thread seal tape made from polytetrafluoroethylene, designed to give a watertight seal on threaded fittings and compression joints. You should use it on pipework where fittings screw together or compress, when replacing a tap or reconnecting a washing machine hose. It is hardy and compatible with many materials, so it's a good first fix for leaks rather than a permanent repair to broken pipework.

Which pipe materials and fittings is this tape safe to use with?

The tape is compatible with cast iron, steel, alloys, plastic, brass and ceramics, so it covers the vast majority of household plumbing. It works on both threaded fittings and compression joints, meaning you can use the same tape on a brass kitchen tap thread or a plastic irrigation fitting. Because it's PTFE and non-adhesive, it won't react with these materials.

Is Silverline PTFE tape safe for drinking water pipes?

Yes. The product description specifically states it can be used on all types of water pipes including drinking water, so it is suitable for potable water connections. The manufacturer's ISO 9001 accreditation also supports consistent quality and safety in production.

What sizes and pack options are available, and how much will you need?

A common size offered here is 12mm x 12m per roll, and you can buy single rolls or packs of 5 or 10. One 12m roll is usually plenty for a few household jobs like replacing a tap or two, while a pack of 10 gives you a handy supply if you do regular DIY or trade work. If you want bulk for workshops or multiple properties, the 5- or 10-pack keeps replacement tape on hand.

What are the advantages and limits of using PTFE tape for leaks?

The advantages are that PTFE tape provides a reliable, watertight seal on threaded fittings and compression joints, is compatible with many materials and is a low-cost, durable solution. Its limits are that it does not fill cracks or repair damaged pipe bodies and it is non-adhesive, so it won't bond materials together; you still need a sound fitting. For a leaking joint caused by a damaged thread or a cracked pipe, a replacement part or a different repair method will be needed.
