Ceramic kitchen sinks are substantially tough thanks to their fireclay construction. The fireclay is fired at extremely high temperatures, providing superb strength that is perfect for busy households.

1, 1.5 and 2 bowl kitchen sinks

1 bowl:

The standard kitchen sink has one large bowl which is perfect for washing dishes (and hands!) and doesn’t take up too much space making it a good choice for smaller kitchens.

1.5 bowls: 

If you need a little extra space, you can also get 1.5 bowl sinks which consist of one large bowl and a smaller bowl next to it. The smaller bowl is ideal for things such as peeling vegetables or pouring drinks away when dishes are soaking in the larger bowl.

2 bowls:

2 bowl sinks are exactly that, two large bowls! This allows you to multi-task which is super important especially when you have a large family to cater for. One bowl can be used to soak dirty dishes whilst the other can be used to wash and prepare food. These are an excellent choice for larger families and larger kitchens.

Which sink material should I pick for everyday use, stainless steel, ceramic/fireclay or granite/granite composite?

For busy kitchens, stainless steel is the most forgiving, it resists knocks and is easy to wipe clean, as seen in ranges like Oakland and Iconica. Ceramic or fireclay gives a smooth, glossy finish that suits farmhouse styles such as the Classic or Farmhouse Belfast sinks, but it can chip if struck and is heavier to handle. Granite and granite composite are hard-wearing, heat- and stain-resistant and come in colours like charcoal, white and grey, so they suit family cooks who want durability plus a contemporary look.

How do I decide between a single bowl, 1.5 bowl or a double bowl sink?

A single bowl is ideal if you wash large pans or want uninterrupted bowl space, options include the Prato 790 x 510mm and Oridian single 540 x 440mm. A 1.5 bowl gives a main bowl plus a smaller rinsing bowl for multitasking, such as the Elements 1000 x 500mm or many Oridian models. Double bowls suit two-person kitchens or if you prefer one bowl for washing and one for rinsing, but they do need a wider worktop.

What are the practical differences between inset, undermount and Belfast (apron) sinks?

Inset sinks sit into a cut-out and are the most common and straightforward for standard cabinets, many Rangemaster sinks are inset models. Undermount sinks, such as Oridian undermount 560 x 440mm, fix beneath the worktop so you can sweep crumbs straight into the bowl and they pair best with solid-surface or stone worktops. Belfast or apron-front sinks offer deep bowls and a distinct traditional look, but require a cabinet designed to carry the exposed front.

How do I choose the correct drainer orientation or whether to have one at all?

Look at your kitchen layout and where you normally empty and dry dishes, if your drainboard will sit beside the hob or dishwasher choose a left- or right-hand drainer accordingly; the range shows left-only, right-only and left-or-right options. If you prefer a minimalist look or use a dish-rack inside a bowl, select a sink with no drainer; many granite and stainless models come without a drainer for that cleaner finish. Practical example: place a drainer on the side opposite your dishwasher so you can load straight from the drainer into the machine.

Will a Rangemaster sink come with a waste kit and how do I match a tap to the sink?

Most Rangemaster sinks are supplied with a matching waste kit, so you won't need to source that separately.
