Wall Inset Gas Fires

To fit in with the design of a modern, contemporary home, a wall inset gas fire is a great choice. Sometimes called “hole in the wall” gas fires. This style of fire is recessed into the wall and models are available for all chimney and flue types.

Wall Outset Gas Fires

This type of gas fire has a direct connection to the flue and is fitted on to the wall with minimal building work required. A virtually hassle-free installation. Wall outset gas fires are a perfect choice for homes requiring both great performance and stunning looks.

Hearth Inset Gas Fires

Hearth inset gas fires save space as they are recessed into the chimney breast or flue. They are available in a choice of slimline or full depth fuel beds. There are also balanced flue options for homes without a chimney or flue.

Hearth Outset Gas Fires

Set onto a hearth this type of gas fire takes a more prominent position as a key design feature in the room. Some models even have the option of side windows so the flames can be seen from all sides. Outset gas fires come in a wide range of styles from very basic to ultra-modern.

The Different Types of Gas Fire Control Explained

Slide Control
This allows the user to switch the fire on and control the flame height via a small lever located at the top right-hand side of the trim.

On some brands, such as Flavel Fires, the slide control option is powered by an AA battery meaning that no connection to the mains electricity supply is needed. This control option is popular with the elderly and less able-bodied users.

Semi Remote Control
With this system you light the fire using the traditional manual control system but you are then able to use a remote control handset to adjust the heat output and flame height.

Electronic Top or Side Control System
Both ignition and heat are controlled by a single rotary motion to light the fire. These easy-to-use controls are available on Flavel radiant outset models. They are powered by an AA battery and require no mains electric connections.

Discreet easy access buttons are used to ignite the fire and adjust heat and flame height

Full Remote Control
The remote control handset is used to light the fire as well as control both the heat output and flame height.

Remote Control with Thermostat
This system is the most advanced. The remote handset is used to light the fire as well as to adjust the flame height and heat output.

In addition, the remote contains a thermostatic control to automatically adjust the heat output to maintain the room temperature you select. They also have a timer that can be pre-programmed to ensure your room will be warm whenever you wish.

There are many ways you can now light and control gas fires. Many of the newer control options are much simpler to use and give much better control than in the past. 

The most common type is still the manual, Piezo control, positioned at the bottom of the fire, but many people prefer gas fires that don't force them to get down on their knees to operate. Many models of gas fires are now available with several control upgrades and different types of partial or full remote control.

Top Control
A push down and twist ignition and rotating flame control located on the top of outset fires. Easier to use than the traditional manual system as you don’t have to bend down to light the fire.

Gas Fire Efficiency Explained

What do we mean by "Gas Fire Efficiency"? In simple terms, it is a measure of how much of the heat generated goes into heating the room compared to how much is wasted (e.g. lost in the gases going up the chimney).

If a Gas Fire is 100% efficient then all the heat generated would be heating the room, if it is 50% efficient then only half would. The more heat that goes into making a room warmer, the more efficient a fire is, the less it costs you to run and the better it is for the environment.

Open Front Gas Fires (Up to 74% Efficient)

Open front gas fires look amazing with their traditional open fire design. They provide warmth via convected air, pulled under the fire, heated by the heat exchanger then expelled from the top canopy. They also emit radiant heat from the fuel bed.

Outset Living Flame Fire

Outset Living Flame Gas Fires (Up to 78% Efficient)

Outset fires sit on the hearth rather than being inset into the chimney breast. The living flame type has a glass front, to provide radiant heat.

Some styles have additional glass panels on the sides, maximizing the radiant heat. They also draw in cold air to heat and expel via convection.

Outset Radiant Gas Fires (Up to 84% Efficient)

Similar to the living flame radiant fires except they have ceramic plates rather than a coal or pebble bed to heat the room. They also use a heat exchanger at the back of the fire to heat the air via convection.

Some consider them a little old-fashioned but they’re very effective at heating a room, staying warm long after they have been turned off.


Glass Fronted High-Efficiency Gas Fires (Up to 89% Efficient)

Hearth mounted or hole in the wall gas fires with glass fronts, are the most efficient available for conventional chimney flue systems. 

Their heat radiates directly into the room, concentrated by the glass front, they deliver more heat to the room minimizing that is lost via the chimney. They also generate warm air from convected heat passing through a heat exchanger.

Balanced Flue High-Efficiency Gas Fires (Up to 94% Efficient)

Balanced flue gas fires come with their own flue system which goes out directly through an external wall, filtering away any harmful gases. 

They draw in cold air from the room as with most other fires, but they also pull it in from outside, increasing the airflow into the fire. This is heat within the fire and released from the canopy at the top. There is also a fuel bed to provide radiant heat.

Flueless Gas Fires (Up to 100% Efficient)

The most efficient of all gas fires are flueless gas fires. These are for use without a chimney, but they instead of an external flue they have a built-in catalytic converter to remove any dangerous waste gases.

Flueless gas fires have a self-monitoring system that measures the quality of the air, switching themselves off if they detect a drop in air quality that could indicate a catalytic converter failure.

Flueless fires can’t be used in very small rooms as they need sufficient air to burn. 30 cubic metres is usually enough, but check the specific requirements and your room size.
