Plastic Shower Pumps

Poor shower performance may not necessarily be caused by your shower itself, sometimes it can be as simple as poor water pressure being delivered to it. There is an easy remedy to this and it comes in the form of shower pumps designed to boost both the hot and cold water to your shower. These plastic shower pumps are great if you’re on a budget. Indeed, these plastic shower pumps are just as powerful as brass pumps but with the added bonus of being more economical to purchase. We split our range of plastic shower pumps into single and twin impeller models. Single impeller pumps are for either the hot or the cold feed whereas twin impeller pumps will serve both the hot and cold equally. Upgrade your showers today with a plastic shower pump.

How do I know whether to buy a single or a twin impeller pump?

If only one feed to the shower is weak, typically the hot feed from a gravity tank or the cold feed, a single impeller pump (for hot OR cold) will be sufficient. If both hot and cold arrive at the shower at low pressure, choose a twin impeller pump so both feeds are boosted equally for a stable mixer shower. a single 2.5 bar regenerative model is ideal if only the hot tank is low, while a twin 2.6 bar Salamander will give consistently stronger flow to both feeds for a mixer. Twin pumps are the usual choice for modern mixer showers; singles are a more economical option when only one feed needs help.

What's the difference between positive head, negative head and universal pumps, and which do you need?

Positive head pumps are for installations where the water at the pump has some static head above the inlet, which is common when the loft tank is higher than the pump. Negative head pumps are designed to work where the supply is below the shower outlet or when the pump may have to draw water against a low or no head. Universal pumps are capable of operating in either situation and are useful if you're unsure of the supply conditions. If you're not certain which applies, a universal head pump removes the guesswork and suits most retrofit projects.

How much pressure (bar) should I choose for a better shower experience?

Typical outputs on these pumps range from about 1.5 bar up to 3.6 bar. Choose around 1.5–2.0 bar for a noticeable, economical boost to a single shower; 2.4–2.6 bar is a common sweet spot for powerful showering and most mixer valves, as shown by popular Salamander 2.6 bar twin models; 3.0 bar and above suits multi-outlet or house pumps where you want strong flow to more than one bathroom. Match the bar rating to how many outlets you'll run and the shower type: a single mixer usually doesn't need the highest bars, whereas simultaneous use of shower and taps benefits from higher output.

Should you pick a regenerative or a centrifugal pump for your bathroom?

Regenerative pumps are well suited to single-shower boosting because they generate higher pressure at lower flow and tend to be compact and efficient; many CT XTRA models use this design. Centrifugal pumps deliver higher flow and are a better fit if you need to boost several outlets or run a whole bathroom, as seen in the RP series. If you want a quiet, strong shower for one bathroom, regenerative is often the better match; choose centrifugal for multi-outlet or house-boosting applications.

Are plastic shower pumps as reliable and powerful as brass ones, and what are the trade-offs?

Plastic pumps on this range are described as just as powerful as brass pumps while being more economical to buy, so you won't sacrifice performance for cost. The main trade-off is material: plastic models are lighter and cheaper, whereas brass can offer greater long-term corrosion resistance in some environments. For most domestic bathrooms a plastic twin impeller pump such as the Salamander CT80B delivers strong, reliable boosting and sensible savings, making it a practical choice unless your installer specifically requests brass for a particular plumbing environment.
