How do I know if a positive head pump is right for your shower or if you need a universal model?

A positive head pump is only suitable when the shower outlet sits lower than a cold water storage tank, typically the attic cistern, because the pump relies on that gravity-fed head. If your system matches that layout, a positive head pump will boost one water supply or a premixed feed to a single outlet. If your roof tank isn't above the shower, look at the universal models in our range, which are labelled "Universal" and give more flexibility for different installations. if you have a loft tank directly above a single shower, a positive pump is usually appropriate; if you have mains pressure or the tank is below the shower, a universal option will suit better.

What is the difference between "Up to 2.0 Bar" and "Over 2.0 Bar" and which boost do you need?

The split refers to how much extra pressure the pump provides: up to 2.0 bar gives a small to medium increase, while over 2.0 bar delivers a noticeably stronger boost. Outputs on the range run from 1.5 bar through 4.5 bar, so choose 1.5–2.0 bar for a single shower and a gentle improvement, and 3.0 bar or higher if you want a powerful rinse or you have a larger shower head or multiple outlets. a 1.5–2.0 bar model suits a typical mixer shower; pick a 3.0 bar or 3.6 bar pump if you want a stronger "power shower" feel.

You have separate hot and cold tanks, do you need a twin pump or will a single impeller do?

Most pumps in this range are single-feed, which boost either the hot or the cold supply or a single premixed feed; a twin pump is necessary only if you want to boost both hot and cold separately. There are twin options included in our range, such as the Showermate 2.6 Bar Twin, which will boost both supplies to the shower for better balance and higher overall flow. If only one cistern feeds your shower or you boost the premixed feed, a single impeller pump is usually sufficient.

The range lists centrifugal, peripheral and regenerative pumps, how do those types affect performance?

All three pump types are offered across the outputs on the page (1.5 to 4.5 bar), but they have different characteristics: regenerative models are often compact and common for modest boosts, centrifugal pumps tend to deliver higher flow suitable for stronger performance, and peripheral pumps sit in between. Look at the output you need first, a 2.5–2.6 bar regenerative will give a solid improvement for a single shower, while centrifugal or higher-bar models (3.0–4.5 bar) are better if you want more power. Match the pump type and bar rating to how forceful you want the shower spray to be.

Does the pump's construction material, brass versus plastic, make a practical difference for you?

our range shows both brass (9) and plastic (10) constructions, and the choice affects durability and budget. Brass bodies are generally more robust and resistant to wear, so they suit hard-water areas or long service expectations; plastic units are lighter and often more affordable while still performing well for a single shower. If you want a proven, long-lasting option choose a brass model; if you're upgrading on a tighter budget for a single bathroom, a good-quality plastic pump can be perfectly acceptable.

Make sure your hot water supply is as powerful as your cold with one of our Positive Head Single Impeller Shower Pumps. They’re designed to increase the pressure of one of your water supplies (or both premixed) to a single outlet like a shower. Positive pumps like these need to be used in applications where the outlet at the shower is lower than the outlet on the cold water storage tank which is normally installed in the attic. We’ve split them into two subgroups, Up To 2.0 Bar and Over 2.0 Bar, which refers to the boost that’s provided. Less than 2.0 Bar will be a small to medium increase and above 2.0 Bar will be more powerful.
