How do I decide between a single impeller and a twin impeller pump for my bathroom?

If you only need to boost either the hot or the cold feed, a single shower fed from one side, a single impeller pump is fine. If your shower mixer draws hot and cold separately, or you want to boost whole-bathroom fittings and protect thermostatic valves, a twin impeller pump is recommended; many Salamander twin pumps (such as the 1.5 Bar CT50XTRA or 3.0 Bar RP100TU) are designed specifically for that. Twin pumps boost both supplies independently, giving steadier temperature control and safer operation with modern mixers.

What is the difference between positive head and universal head pumps, and how do I know which one to choose?

Positive head pumps suit gravity-fed systems where a cold water tank above the pump provides a constant head; they are common in homes with loft tanks. Universal head pumps will work on both gravity and mains-fed supplies, so they are the safer choice if your cold feed is from the mains or you are unsure. If your installer has a mains cold feed or the cold side is higher pressure than the hot, pick a universal model such as the RP75TU or RP100TU.

Regenerative or centrifugal, which pump type will give me the best shower experience?

Regenerative pumps are compact and give good pressure for single showers with a focus on higher pressure at lower flow, making them ideal for one or two outlets; options include the 1.5 Bar CT55XTRA and 2.5 Bar CT85XTRA. Centrifugal pumps deliver higher flow rates for multiple outlets or whole-house boosting, so choose a centrifugal model like the 3.0 Bar RP100PT if you plan to run more than one tap or a powerful shower alongside other fittings. Think of regenerative for a strong single shower, centrifugal for volume across several outlets.

How much pressure (bar) do I actually need for a comfortable shower?

For a gentle but reliable boost to a standard shower, pumps rated around 1.5 Bar are common and economical. If you want a noticeably stronger spray or plan to use more than one outlet, aim for around 2.0 to 2.6 Bar; examples in our range include 2.6 Bar CT80B. For very powerful showers or whole-house boosting, 3.0 Bar and above, such as the RP100TU 3.0 Bar or the RP120SU 3.6 Bar, will deliver higher flow and firmer pressure.

Does the pump construction material matter, brass or plastic?

Yes. Brass-bodied pumps are typically more durable and handle long-term use and higher pressures well, making them a good choice for whole-house or frequently used systems. Plastic construction keeps cost and weight down and is perfectly adequate for many domestic shower pumps; the range includes both options, with nine brass and seventeen plastic models in our range. If you want longevity and robustness for a busy household, favour a brass model; for a single-shower boost at a lower price, a plastic model will often do the job.
