Negative Head Shower Pumps (Single Impeller)

Single impeller shower pumps are a great solution for boosting the pressure of one of you water supplies to an outlet. These particular single impeller pumps have a negative head which means they’re designed for installation where the outlet is in a higher position that the cold water storage tank. The bar refers to the pressure or boost provided by the pump, anything below 2.0 bar will be a low to medium increase in pressure while 2.0 bar and above would be a more powerful increase.

What is the difference between a negative head pump and a universal pump, and how do you know which one to buy?

A negative head pump is designed specifically for situations where the outlet (your shower) sits higher than the cold water storage tank, while universal pumps are offered for most other setups and are more flexible. On this page seven of the eight single-impeller models are described as universal and only one is described as negative head, so universal models will suit the majority of homes. If your shower head is significantly above the cold tank you should look at a negative head option; for typical loft tank and shower arrangements a universal pump will normally be appropriate.

How much pressure boost (bar) do you actually need for a better shower?

The product range shows outputs from 2.0 up to 4.5 bar, and the copy explains that anything below 2.0 bar gives a low to medium increase while 2.0 bar and above delivers a stronger boost. If you have a standard mixer shower one of the 2.0–2.6 bar models (the Grundfos SSR2 2.0CN or the 2.6 bar Showermate) will usually give a noticeable improvement; choose 3.0 bar or above for large rainfall heads or where you want a very powerful flow.

Do the different pump types (centrifugal, peripheral, regenerative) make a practical difference for a single shower?

Yes, the pump type influences how pressure and flow behave. Centrifugal pumps tend to give steadier flow for higher capacities, while peripheral and regenerative pumps are compact and are commonly used for single-outlet boosting where you want a strong pressure rise rather than very high flow. If your priority is a strong shower from one outlet, peripheral or regenerative types in this range often suit that brief; if you expect higher continuous flow, check centrifugal options.

Will a single impeller shower pump be enough if you want to run other bathroom outlets at the same time?

Single impeller pumps are designed to boost one water supply to a single outlet, so they work best when you're powering one shower head or one outlet. If you plan to run a shower and a basin or multiple outlets simultaneously you may find the output falls away, and a twin-impeller or higher-capacity solution is usually a better match. the single-impeller Stuart Turner Monsoon models in our range here are excellent for one strong shower but aren't intended to feed several fixtures at once.

How do materials, brand and price affect what you should buy?

The selection shows both brass and plastic construction (four of each), and brands range from Grundfos and Salamander to Stuart Turner, with prices at a lower to mid-range price point to the current product price. Brass-bodied pumps generally feel more robust and can tolerate rougher conditions over time, whereas plastic models are lighter and can be more economical; the Grundfos SSR2 at about the current product price offers a good entry-level 2.0 bar option, while the Stuart Turner Monsoon 4.5 bar at around the current product price gives a high-pressure, premium choice. Match the material and brand to how often you'll use the shower and how much pressure you need.
