How do I choose the right shape and size of toilet seat for my pan?

Look for the shape that matches your pan: round, D-shape (often called 'D' or compact), and oval are all widely available here. Compact D-shape seats such as the Ceramica Compact Soft Close are designed for slim cloakroom pans, while family or oval seats like the Ceramica Family Toilet Seat give more sitting area for larger toilets. Also check the seat's hole centre or fitting range against your pan, our range lists common centre ranges (51–100 mm, 101–150 mm and 151–200 mm) so you can match the fixings accurately.

Which materials and finishes will give the best balance of comfort, durability and style?

Solid and moulded wood seats feel warm and bring a natural look, but need a little extra care in wet rooms. Thermoset plastics and treated wood seats such as Croydex Constance or many Ceramica models are very hard-wearing and easy to keep clean, making them practical for busy bathrooms. Stainless-steel hinges add corrosion resistance, and finishes range from gloss black and dark grey to oak, teak and antique pine so you can match your cabinetry or tiles.

Is soft-close worth paying extra for, and when would you want quick-release as well?

Soft-close is a popular upgrade across ranges, products like the Bemis Silentium and many Croydex seats include it to prevent loud slamming and protect the pan and seat edges. Quick-release is handy if you want to remove the seat for a deep clean; Croydex Lugano and some RAK compact seats offer quick-release with soft-close for both convenience and peace of mind. If you have children or a high-use family bathroom, soft-close with quick-release is a sensible choice; for a spare cloakroom you might prefer a basic, lower-cost seat.
