How do I decide between an electric, mixer, digital or smart shower for my home?

Look at your water supplies first, an electric shower needs cold water only and heats on demand, so it's ideal if you don't have a hot feed; mixers, digital and smart showers all require both hot and cold supplies. If you have a combi boiler and want simplicity, a mixer or thermostatic mixer is a good match; if you crave precise temperature control or app control, a digital or smart shower (which use microprocessor controls) gives you that extra accuracy and features. a family with no loft tank might fit a 9.5kW electric, whereas a renovated ensuite on a combi boiler will benefit from a concealed digital or thermostatic mixer.

What kW rating and cable size will an electric shower need in my house?

The catalogue lists common ratings such as 8.5kW, 9kW, 9.5kW and 10.5kW, and the recommended cable sizes reflect those outputs, 8.5kW can use 6mm² cable for runs up to 18m or 10mm² for 18–35m, while most 9–10.8kW units use 10mm². If the cable run is longer than 35m a qualified electrician should assess voltage drop and may specify 16mm². Always confirm the exact kW of the model you like and have the electrical work signed off.

Should I get a thermostatic, pressure-stabilised or manual temperature control?

Thermostatic valves mix hot and cold and automatically adjust to supply changes, so they're excellent if you want stable temperature when someone else uses water elsewhere. Pressure-stabilised valves specifically keep both pressure and temperature steady and help prevent sudden spikes when taps are used, which suits homes with variable flow from a combi boiler. Manual controls are simpler and cheaper but require you to balance temperature yourself; pick thermostatic or pressure-stabilised if safety and comfort matter, especially for children or older users.

How many outlets and what head types should I choose for my bathroom layout?

Single-outlet showers (handsets or fixed heads) are the simplest and common in smaller enclosures; dual-outlet kits, often a rainfall head plus a handset, give flexibility and are popular for family bathrooms. There are also three-outlet options that add body jets or a bath filler for a spa-like experience if you have the space and pipework. a compact shower cubicle benefits from a handset-only set, while a larger wetroom feels more luxurious with a ceiling rainfall plus a handset.

What's the practical difference between exposed and concealed installation, and which finish should I choose?

Exposed showers have the valve, pipework and riser on display so they're quicker and cheaper to retrofit, and most exposed options come in chrome, black or white finishes; concealed installations hide pipework for a cleaner, minimalist look but need in-wall work. Chrome remains the most versatile finish, black and brushed brass give a contemporary or warm designer feel respectively, and white suits a soft, modern aesthetic. If you're updating without re-plastering go for an exposed chrome or black bar mixer; if you're renovating the wall choose a concealed thermostatic mixer in chrome or brushed brass for a sleek finish.
