Shower Type

Electric Shower: Requires cold water only. Water is heated by an electrical heating element for hot water on demand.

Mixer Shower: Includes bar mixer, concealed mixer and exposed mixer. These showers require hot and cold feeds that are mixed and differ by installation style.

Digital Shower: Requires hot and cold feeds. Uses a digital thermostat for precise temperature and flow control.

Smart Shower: Same requirements as a digital shower, but with smartphone and smart home control.

Power Shower: Requires hot and cold feeds and includes an integrated pump to boost water pressure.

Shower Tower: Requires hot and cold feeds into a single tower unit. Includes luxuries such as body jets.

Outlets

1 Outlet: One shower head that's either fixed or attached to an adjustable riser rail.

2 Outlets: Two shower heads, one wall or ceiling mounted and one handset, that can be used independently or sometimes simultaneously.

3 Outlets: Three shower functions, typically a shower head, a handset, and an additional feature such as body jets or a bath filler, which can be operated separately or in combination.

Water Feed

Ceiling Fed: Ceiling fed showers use pipework that comes through your ceiling. They can be used with one or two shower heads.

Wall Fed: Wall fed showers use pipework that comes through the wall behind the shower. They can also be used with one or two shower heads and are easier to retrofit.

Supply Type

High Pressure / Combi: These systems use a combination boiler which heats mains pressure water and sends it around your home.

Low Pressure / Gravity Fed: These systems usually use a cold water tank in the loft and a hot water cylinder in an airing cupboard.

Temperature Control

Manual: Must be independently supplied with hot and cold water feeds. Temperature and flow are controlled by the user.

Thermostatic: Mixes hot and cold water to selected temperature and adjusts to changes in pressure or temperature of the water supply.

Microprocessor: Commonly used in digital and smart showers. Automatically controls flow and temperature.

Pressure Stabilised: Keeps temperature and pressure consistent. Stops spikes when water is used by other appliances.

Installation Type

Exposed: Pipework, showerheads, and controls are on display.

Concealed: Pipework is hidden behind the wall for a minimalistic look.

Cool Touch

Cool Touch: Specially designed shower valves that stay cool no matter the temperature of water. Ideal for children or vulnerable users.

Eco Shower

Eco Shower: includes clever water-saving features such as proximity sensors and eco modes.

Which Aqualisa shower type will work best with my plumbing and household needs, electric, mixer, digital, smart or power?

If you only have a cold feed (no hot water pipe) an electric shower is the simplest option because it heats water on demand from a single cold supply. Mixer, digital and smart showers all need both hot and cold feeds; a digital or smart model gives you precise microprocessor control and extra features like smartphone operation, while a mixer is a simpler mechanical blend. Power showers include an integrated pump to boost pressure, so they suit low-pressure gravity systems or weaker supplies. If you live in a flat with a combi boiler you might favour a digital or smart shower for steady temperature and app control, whereas a loft‑tank gravity system may benefit from a power shower with a pump.

How many outlets (1, 2 or 3) should I choose for the shower?

One outlet gives you a single head or handset and is perfect for small en suites or simple family bathrooms. Two outlets usually combine a fixed head (wall or ceiling) with a handset so you can enjoy a rainfall head plus flexible rinsing. Three outlets add extras such as body jets or a bath filler, useful if you want a spa‑style shower experience or multi‑function use. If you have a compact bathroom, a dual head setup (rainfall plus handset) often offers the best balance of luxury and practicality.

Which showers are compatible with combi boilers, gravity systems or need a pump?

Aqualisa lists products by supply type, many models on our website are specified for HP/combi systems and some for LP/gravity systems, while other models are marked suitable for all systems. Power showers include a built‑in pump specifically to raise pressure in gravity systems. If you have a combi boiler, look for HP/combi or “suitable for all systems” listings; if your hot water comes from a cylinder and cold from a loft tank, choose LP/gravity compatible or a powered model.

What's the difference between thermostatic, manual and microprocessor temperature control, and which is safest for children or vulnerable users?

Manual valves simply mix hot and cold and rely on you to adjust temperature, while thermostatic valves actively blend feeds to hold the temperature you set and compensate for pressure or temperature changes. Microprocessor control, used in digital and smart showers, gives the most precise regulation and can include presets and remote control. For homes with children or vulnerable users, thermostatic valves with Cool Touch technology are a great choice because they prevent scalding and keep the valve surface cool.

For an electric Aqualisa shower, how do I choose the right kW rating and what cable size will I need?

Higher kW gives hotter flow and better performance at the same flow rate; common Aqualisa electric options include 8.5kW, 9.5kW and 10.5kW models. The cable size guidance is specific: 8.5kW can use 6mm² for runs up to 18m (10mm² for 18–35m), and 9–10.5kW models typically require 10mm²; very long runs over 35m may need assessment and 16mm². If you have a short cable run and modest supply, an 8.5kW will do the job; if you want stronger flow and hotter spray, opt for 9.5–10.5kW but be sure your electrical supply can support it.
