Page 2 of 2 Thermostatic Electric Showers

Return to page 1 of Thermostatic Electric Showers

Thermostatic Electric showers have been designed with you and your safety in mind, giving you a worry-free shower every single time. The great thing about electric showers is that you never have to worry about running out of hot water, or even having a hot water supply available in the first place, as a heating element within the shower heats cold water as it passes through. The thermostatic feature is there to keep your temperature steady and prevent any unplanned spikes or drops which can cause injury, enabling you to have a relaxing shower at the temperature you've chosen even if someone else wants to use the tap at the same time!

Shower Type

Electric Shower: Requires cold water only. Water is heated by an electrical heating element for hot water on demand.

Mixer Shower: Includes bar mixer, concealed mixer and exposed mixer. These showers require hot and cold feeds that are mixed and differ by installation style.

Digital Shower: Requires hot and cold feeds. Uses a digital thermostat for precise temperature and flow control.

Smart Shower: Same requirements as a digital shower, but with smartphone and smart home control.

Power Shower: Requires hot and cold feeds and includes an integrated pump to boost water pressure.

Shower Tower: Requires hot and cold feeds into a single tower unit. Includes luxuries such as body jets.

Outlets

1 Outlet: One shower head that's either fixed or attached to an adjustable riser rail.

2 Outlets: Two shower heads, one wall or ceiling mounted and one handset, that can be used independently or sometimes simultaneously.

3 Outlets: Three shower functions, typically a shower head, a handset, and an additional feature such as body jets or a bath filler, which can be operated separately or in combination.

Power (kW)

8.5kW: 6mm² cable size for ≤18m run. 10mm² cable size for 18-35m run.

9.0kW: 10mm² cable size.

9.5kW: 10mm² cable size.

9.7kW: 10mm² cable size.

10.5kW: 10mm² cable size.

For runs longer than 35m, a qualified electrician should assess voltage drop and possibly use 16mm² cable.

How does a thermostatic electric shower keep your water temperature steady compared with a standard electric shower?

A thermostatic electric shower uses a thermostat to monitor and adjust the mix of water so the temperature you set stays constant, even if someone else turns a tap elsewhere in the house. Because the shower heats cold water on demand with an internal element, you won't run out of hot water, and the thermostat prevents sudden scalding or cold shocks. if someone flushes a toilet mid-shower, a thermostatic model will correct the temperature quickly so you remain comfortable.

Which power rating (kW) is best for the flow and warmth you want?

Higher kW ratings generally give stronger flow and hotter spray under the same mains pressure, models here range from around 8.5kW up to 10.5kW. An 8.5–9kW unit suits a smaller bathroom or lower demand, while 9.5–10.5kW provides a fuller flow if you prefer a more powerful shower. If you have a gravity-fed or particularly weak supply, look at the pumped options or purpose-built low-pressure models such as the Advance ATL Low Pressure 9kW.

Are there thermostatic electric showers designed for accessible or care bathrooms?

Yes, several AKW SmartCare, SmartCare Plus and SmartCare Lever kits are made specifically for care settings, with colour-coded or lever controls and care kits that make operation easier. These kits often include larger, easier-to-grip controls or alternate handset options to help users with reduced dexterity. If you need assisted bathing, a SmartCare Plus or lever model gives safer, simpler control and is available in white, chrome or grey trims.

How do finishes and styles affect your choice, white, chrome, slate effect or frosted glass?

Finishes change both the look and how the unit sits with your decor: white is discreet and suits traditional bathrooms, chrome gives a contemporary, reflective finish, and slate effect or frosted glass creates a premium, design-led focal point. If your bathroom has chrome taps and fittings, a chrome-faced shower will match; choose frosted glass or slate if you want the shower to be a stylish feature wall.

What do "Flex", "Extra", "Extended kit" and care kits add to a basic thermostatic electric shower?

These variants add practical features such as longer riser rails, extended shower hose lengths, alternative handsets or dedicated care fittings that increase reach and adaptability. the Mira Advance Flex Extra offers more movement and reach for a family bathroom, while the AKW care kits bundle handsets and controls that help assisted washing. They don't change the core thermostatic function, but they make the shower easier to use in larger enclosures or for users with mobility needs.
