Stuart Turner Techflo Shower Pumps

As part of the Stuart Turner Techflo pumps you have the QT range and the TP range of single and twin impeller pumps; Single impeller pumps will only allow you to pump either hot or cold water while twin impeller pumps can do both hot and cold and delivers them both at an equal flow. The Stuart Turner Techflo TP pumps have been designed to improve the pressure and flow of the incoming hot and cold water supply. This could be to an individual shower, shower mixer, mixer tap or bath. This type of pump is only suitable for positive head applications. The Techflo QT single impeller pumps are designed to increase water supply delivery to single taps or to pump mixed water from a shower mixer. These are suitable for positive head installations only.

What is the difference between a single impeller and a twin impeller pump, and which is right for my bathroom?

A single impeller pump boosts only one water feed or a mixed outlet, so it will pump either hot or cold supply lines, or the mixed water after a shower mixer. A twin impeller pump boosts both hot and cold supplies separately and delivers them at equal flow, so your mixer valve sees balanced pressure. If you only need to improve the flow from a single tap or the mixed outlet of a shower mixer, a single impeller (QT or TP single) is fine; if you want to lift both hot and cold supplies to a mixer or to multiple fittings, choose a twin impeller TP.

What does "positive head" mean and how do I know if a Techflo pump will work in my system?

Positive head means the pump expects a gravity-fed supply so there is already some static flow into the pump when a tap is opened. Stuart Turner Techflo QT and TP pumps are suitable only for positive head installations, so they are not for systems that need the pump to draw water up from a tank by suction. A quick check is whether you already have a gravity-fed header tank above the fittings; if water freely flows to a tap without relying on a suction lift, a positive head Techflo pump is likely appropriate.

How do the Techflo QT and TP ranges differ, and when would you recommend each?

The TP range is designed to improve pressure and flow of incoming hot and cold supplies and is available in single and twin impeller models, while the QT range comprises single impeller pumps aimed at boosting single taps or mixed water from a shower mixer. Choose a TP twin if you need balanced boosting to both hot and cold feeds for a mixer valve, and pick a QT single if you simply want more flow to a single tap or to the mixed outlet of a shower. The product product information also shows output options such as 1.5 and 2.0 bar, so match the strength you want to the fitting you are improving.

Which pump output should I choose, 1.5 bar or 2.0 bar, for a better shower experience?

A 1.5 bar pump gives a modest, quieter boost suitable for standard shower mixers and small bathrooms, while a 2.0 bar pump delivers stronger flow for heavier-use showers, larger shower heads or for filling a bath more quickly. If you have a mixer valve that performs best with balanced, moderate pressure, 1.5 bar can be gentler; if your shower is underpowered and you want a noticeably stronger spray, the 2.0 bar option is a better match. Note that twin impeller models at these outputs will maintain equal hot and cold flow into the mixer.

Can I use a Techflo single impeller pump to boost the mixed water from my existing shower mixer?

Yes, the QT single impeller pumps are specifically designed to increase delivery to mixed water from a shower mixer, so you can boost the outlet after the valve to improve flow at the shower head. Bear in mind that single impeller pumps used on supply lines will only pump hot or cold, so make sure you are boosting the mixed outlet rather than both supply feeds. if your thermostatic mixer produces low flow at the shower, fitting a QT single on the mixed outlet will give a clearer, stronger shower spray without changing both hot and cold supplies.
