Which thickness should you choose, 6mm or 10mm, for underfloor heating or as a tiled floor backer?

For underfloor heating you'll often choose 6mm because it keeps the heating close to the tiles so the system warms up faster. The 10mm board gives better insulation and retains heat longer, but it raises the finished floor level and can slow the initial warm-up. If you have an existing concrete slab and want maximum heat retention, 10mm can be a good choice; for retrofit heating or where floor height is tight, 6mm is more practical.

How do I know which board is suitable for my subfloor, concrete, timber or a tiled floor?

Look at the product suitability label: some ProWarm boards are specified for concrete floors only, while others are rated for concrete, timber and tiled floors. If your joisted or timber floor needs insulation under tiles, pick the board marked for concrete/timber/tiled floors. For a simple tiled finish over an existing screed, a board marked for tiled floors will be fine.

Can you use these ProWarm boards with underfloor heating cables and mats, and are they also OK without heating?

Yes, the ProWarm insulation boards are designed for use with ProWarm under tile heating cables and mats, providing a stable, insulated layer beneath the heating. They also work as a standalone insulated backer board under tiles if you do not have heating. fit the 6mm XP‑PRO boards under your heating mat in a bathroom to improve efficiency, or use the Backer‑Pro board under tiles on a cold concrete screed to add insulation.

How many boards do I need and what sizes are available for planning coverage?

Boards commonly come in 1200mm length, with one option at 850mm, so pick the size that minimises waste in your room layout. If you need bulk coverage, the ProWarm Profoam pack covers 10m² and contains 20 boards, which is useful for a small bathroom or kitchen area. Measure your floor area and divide by the board footprint to estimate how many single boards or packs you'll require.

Will the fibreglass mesh cover help tile adhesion and make the boards more durable?

Yes, the extruded polystyrene boards are finished with a fibreglass mesh that improves surface durability and gives better bonding for tile adhesives. That makes tiling quicker and reduces the risk of tiles loosening, especially on floors with heating. The mesh also protects the foam during handling, so the boards stay intact while you cut and fit them.
