Bathrooms can be quite the slippery place at times, so it’s important that vulnerable people take as much care as possible, especially when getting in and out of the bath. One of the simplest and most effective ways of doing this is to fit grab rails in convenient places, so there is always that bit of added support when you need it. They come in a range of different shapes and lengths, so fitting one next to your bath is a lot easier than you might think! Our grab rails are made from high-quality materials too, so using them in a moisture rich environment like a bathroom isn’t an issue either.

Be sure to explore our full range of disabled bathrooms to ensure a safe, accessible bathroom space.

Which type of grab rail should you use next to a bath, by a toilet, or in a shower?

For a bath you often want a straight or angled rail mounted where you step in and out so you can steady yourself; angled rails help if you need a handhold at different heights. By a toilet a back rest rail or a Doc M toilet pack gives side support plus a stable back surface, and hinged support rails with a toilet roll holder are handy where space is tight. In a shower a curved or a longer projection rail gives better clearance for transfers and holds your grip across a wider area.

How do you choose the right length, diameter and projection?

Look at typical lengths included in our range, 300, 450, 600, 800 and 900 mm are common, and match length to the movement you need; an 800 mm rail works well for transferring along a bath edge, while 300–450 mm suits short steadying points. Most rails have a diameter in the 31–60 mm range, which fits most hands comfortably and is the most common option in our range. Projection is how far the rail sticks out from the wall: 1–100 mm suits close support, while 101–200 mm (or more) gives the clearance needed for gripping over a bath or for seated transfers.

Which material and finish will stand up best in a moist bathroom and be easy to keep clean?

Stainless steel is the dominant choice in our range and is durable, corrosion‑resistant and hygienic, so it's ideal for wet bathrooms. Satin or polished stainless and chrome finishes clean easily and hide water marks differently, while plastic or fluted plastic rails offer extra grip and are lightweight and affordable. If you want a contemporary look, matt black or coloured rails (blue, grey, white) are available and useful for visual contrast in accessible bathrooms.

What load rating and fixing system should you pick for safety?

Check the maximum rated load: options appear in 51–100 kg, 101–150 kg and 151–200 kg ranges; choose 101–150 kg for most adults and 151–200 kg if the user needs higher support or you want extra reassurance. Concealed fixings give a neater finish and are widely available, but if your wall is weak consider hinged rails with a supporting leg or exposed mounting that uses stronger wall plates. Also note whether fixings are included; many products list fixings included, which helps ensure the rail is secured correctly.

What are fluted and anti-ligature rails, and when should you choose them?

Fluted rails have a textured surface that improves grip when hands are wet and are offered in plastic and metal styles (fluted white rails in 300–900 mm). Anti‑ligature rails are designed for environments where safety from attachment risk is needed, such as specialist care settings, and you'll see anti‑ligature straight rails in 600 mm options in our range. Pick fluted for extra slip resistance in a home bathroom; choose anti‑ligature only when the space requires that specific safety design.
