Aqualisa Quartz Electric Shower 10.5kW Chrome

Great shower!

Very happy with the new shower. I like its simple design and the flow rate is much better than our old electric shower.

Mira Sport Max Electric Shower 10.8kW White & Chrome

Very pleased.

We decided after much deliberation to get an electric shower installed rather than go through the costly process of having a combi boiler fitted to then have a power shower. Our main concern was that an electric shower would give off a dribble of water rather than a decent jet, so we went for the most powerful we could find which had good reviews. We havent been disappointed- it is powerful enough to have a warming and satisfying shower. It is obviously not as intense as a power shower would be but we are happier than we thought we would be with it, so would recommend it.

Mira Azora 9.8kW Electric Shower

Stylish electric shower

When I saw this stylish electric shower I was very excited as all the others I had seen looked very plastic.I love the opaque glass front, I wanted an electric shower that gave a good flow of water and this one fits the bill. There is an on-off switch and so your heat setting stays set. I bought from plumb world whose price was very competitive and so win win win!!

Triton T80si Pumped Electric Shower 8.5kW

Triton T80si Pumped Electric Shower 8.5kw

I found this shower very easy to install, I chose it as the entry points for the water feed and electric were the same as the old one. the water feed is a simple push fit connection. note that this is not a power shower but one that has a pump that assists the water flow from the cold water tank. it should not be connected directly to mains water pressure.

I recently had this shower fitted was a bit unsure of the look of the flat head but after trying it out its really good, I also checked out the reviews before purchasing it and the feedback was good as in the past Ive always bought a Mira shower. Im very happy with the performance of it.

How do they work?

If you think of a kettle, an electric shower works similar to that, the electric elements heat up the water as it flows through, once it reaches the right temperature, it will shoot out of the showerhead. The temperature of the water is controlled by varying the speed of water flow through the heater tank – the faster the flow, the less time it has to heat up and vice versa. You’ll be glad to hear that safety switches prevent water temperatures from reaching dangerous levels in the case of a blockage – keeping you and your family safe whilst showering!

So, what are the benefits of an electric shower?

  • 98% efficiency – no more stored hot water or long-running pipes!
  • Economical water usage
  • Instant hot water – no more waiting for your water to heat up
  • Separate water heating to the main hot water system – a brilliant feature for homes with more than one bathroom!

The joys of needing just a cold water feed make electric showers the most compatible type of shower on the market. Due to its self-reliance, installation can take place in virtually any type of home; both new builds, even in older builds that don’t have a suitable plumbing system for other shower types. As the technology in-built into the showers continues to advance, the popularity of electric showers have also continued to grow and now makes up for 50% of all new shower sales in the UK alone!

As electric showers can range from 7.5kW all the way to 10.8kW, they all have different demands on the power supply. In general, all showers that have a power rating greater than 9kW will require cabling to be upgraded from the regular 6mm to 10mm. However, if the shower you buy is 9kW or below, the standard 6mm cables connecting your shower to your electric supply will be suitable. It is advised that a professional electrician is consulted prior to the installation of the shower to ensure all criteria and safety checks are met.

Money saving

As mentioned previously, electric showers don’t require a hot water feed since the cold water is heated inside the unit itself. This has the added benefit of not needing to pre-heat the water before use; meaning that you can shower at any time of the day without worrying if you have enough hot water stored up. As well as this, you also save money since your shower will only heat the amount of water it needs to operate; thus making it very economical in comparison to heating an entire tank full of water for a 5-minute shower. Plus they're generally quite cheap to buy when compared with mixers or power showers

Electric Shower

Say goodbye to cold showers

One of the problems with having a big family is the queue for a shower in the morning. With a regular mixer shower, the person who goes in last will likely have very little hot water left, resulting in a pretty disappointing shower experience. However, as an electric shower heats on demand, this will never be a problem even in the biggest families.

Boiler breakdown? No problem

Thanks to the electric shower’s self-reliance, even if your boiler is malfunctioning or breaks down entirely, you’ll still be able to shower and get ready for the day ahead without any worries. Since the shower only requires a mains cold water connection and an electricity supply, the boiler is taken out of the equation entirely. The last thing you want is to be stuck without a hot shower on a freezing cold winter morning after your boiler packs up!

Because the electric shower heats up water from cold when it is needed the maximum flow from the shower is limited by how powerful the heating element is. This is measured by the “power rating” in KW. The cheapest electric showers have power ratings as low as 7kw, while the most expensive ones will have power ratings as high as 10.8kw. The higher the kilowatt rating of the shower the stronger the water flow and the more powerful the shower that you can expect.

Is an electric shower the same as a power shower?

One question that often causes confusion is what the difference is between a power shower and an electric shower. One main difference lies in how water is fed into your shower:

Electric Shower

With an electric shower - only cold water is fed into the shower. Some of this water is passed over an electrical heating element and then mixed back in with cold water to reach your set temperature.

Power Shower

With a power shower - both cold and hot water from your boiler tank is fed into your shower, then mixed together to reach your set temperature.

Electric Shower

The other main difference is that power showers also use an electric pump to increase water pressure. Electric showers rely on the pressure of your mains water supply only - which doesn’t use a pump.

If you do want to connect your electric shower to a shower pump, you can only do so if you don’t have a combi boiler. Pumps should only be used with low-pressure water systems. If you suffer low water pressure, pumped electric showers are also available which can be used with a cold water tank supply - however, they too must not be plumbed straight into your mains water supply.

You're still unsure whether to purchase an electric shower, we suggest that you take a look at the below videos for a more insightful look!

Another thing to consider with electric showers is that the strength of the shower can be considerably less in the winter months! The reason is that the incoming water supply is much colder and the shower has to work much harder to heat up the water to a suitable temperature. As a result the shower can’t sustain such a high flow rate. This video from Mira explains how seasonal changes impact shower performance:
