Bathroom Extractor Fan Accessories

Fitting a bathroom extractor fan is critical to keeping your bathroom moisture levels low, without one the growth of mould or mildew can happen surprisingly quickly. Unfortunately it isn’t as simple as just buying an extractor fan as you’ll need the accessories to go with it to make sure it’s fitted correctly. Ducting and an external grille are vital bathroom accessories for a high-quality and efficient installation. External grilles can be purchased in either white or brown so you can easily match them up to your homes fascias and soffits for a seamless installation.

How do I know what size ducting or vent you need for your bathroom extractor fan?

Match the ducting diameter to your extractor fan's outlet, many fans use a 100mm outlet, so a 100mm internal-fit wall kit or 4" wall vent kit will usually fit. If you have a higher-capacity fan or a longer run, you might need a 6" kit to avoid restricting airflow. Check the fan model or product spec: Airflow iCON and many Manrose fans state the required diameter, and the kits listed (100mm, 4" and 6") cover the common options.

What does a back-draught shutter do and should you get one?

A back-draught shutter prevents cold air, insects and smells from coming back down the duct when the fan is off. Manrose Deluxe ducting kits with back-draught shutters are available in 100mm, giving you that protection built into the internal-fit wall kit. The drawback is a small extra resistance to airflow when the fan runs, but for most domestic bathrooms the benefit of stopping draughts and odours outweighs that.

Can you match the external grille to your house fascias and soffits?

Yes. External grilles are offered in white or brown so you can coordinate with your fascias and soffits for a neater finish. There's also an Airflow iCON 15 anthracite cover for 100mm extractors if you want a darker, contemporary look on a grey or slate-coloured exterior.

What are the practical differences between a timer, humidity module and pull-cord for iCON fans?

A timer module keeps the fan running for a set period after you switch it off to clear moisture, while a humidity (humidistat) module automatically runs the fan when humidity rises and cuts it off when levels fall. A pull-cord module gives simple manual control where you don't want electrical switching through a light. Use a humidity timer in a busy family bathroom to handle fluctuating moisture and a pull-cord in a cloakroom without a light switch.

Are the wall vent installation kits suitable for internal wall installations and what do they include?

Yes, the Manrose Deluxe internal fit wall kits and Xpelair wall vent installation kits are designed for fitting through a wall and typically include ducting, grille and sometimes a back-draught shutter. The 100mm Manrose kits are ideal for standard domestic bathrooms with a 100mm fan outlet, while the Xpelair 4" and 6" kits let you match the duct size to your fan and run length. If your wall is thicker than usual or you need a longer run, choose the larger diameter kit to keep airflow efficient.
