Shower Type

Electric Shower: Requires cold water only. Water is heated by an electrical heating element for hot water on demand.

Mixer Shower: Includes bar mixer, concealed mixer and exposed mixer. These showers require hot and cold feeds that are mixed and differ by installation style.

Digital Shower: Requires hot and cold feeds. Uses a digital thermostat for precise temperature and flow control.

Smart Shower: Same requirements as a digital shower, but with smartphone and smart home control.

Power Shower: Requires hot and cold feeds and includes an integrated pump to boost water pressure.

Shower Tower: Requires hot and cold feeds into a single tower unit. Includes luxuries such as body jets.

Power (kW)

8.5kW: 6mm² cable size for ≤18m run. 10mm² cable size for 18-35m run.

9.0kW: 10mm² cable size.

9.5kW: 10mm² cable size.

9.7kW: 10mm² cable size.

10.5kW: 10mm² cable size.

For runs longer than 35m, a qualified electrician should assess voltage drop and possibly use 16mm² cable.

Outlets

1 Outlet: One shower head that's either fixed or attached to an adjustable riser rail.

2 Outlets: Two shower heads, one wall or ceiling mounted and one handset, that can be used independently or sometimes simultaneously.

3 Outlets: Three shower functions, typically a shower head, a handset, and an additional feature such as body jets or a bath filler, which can be operated separately or in combination.

Water Feed

Ceiling Fed: Ceiling fed showers use pipework that comes through your ceiling. They can be used with one or two shower heads.

Wall Fed: Wall fed showers use pipework that comes through the wall behind the shower. They can also be used with one or two shower heads and are easier to retrofit.

Supply Type

High Pressure / Combi: These systems use a combination boiler which heats mains pressure water and sends it around your home.

Low Pressure / Gravity Fed: These systems usually use a cold water tank in the loft and a hot water cylinder in an airing cupboard.

Temperature Control

Manual: Must be independently supplied with hot and cold water feeds. Temperature and flow are controlled by the user.

Thermostatic: Mixes hot and cold water to selected temperature and adjusts to changes in pressure or temperature of the water supply.

Microprocessor: Commonly used in digital and smart showers. Automatically controls flow and temperature.

Pressure Stabilised: Keeps temperature and pressure consistent. Stops spikes when water is used by other appliances.

Which shower type should you choose for your hot water system, electric, power, mixer, digital or smart?

If you only have a cold water feed, an electric shower is the right choice because it heats water on demand. If your home uses a combination boiler (high pressure), most mixer, thermostatic and many digital or smart showers will work, our range includes HP/combi-compatible options. For low‑pressure gravity systems you'll need models marked LP / gravity fed or a pumped solution such as a power shower, which has an integrated pump to boost pressure. Digital and smart showers still require hot and cold feeds but give precise temperature control and app control if you want that extra convenience.

How do you decide between 1, 2 or 3 outlets for a shower?

One outlet gives you a single head or handset and suits a small en suite or a simple showering setup. Two outlets pair a fixed head (wall or ceiling) with a handset so you can enjoy rainfall and handheld convenience, ideal for family bathrooms. Three outlets add features such as body jets or a tub filler alongside the head and handset, which works well if you want a spa-like shower tower with multiple functions. Think about how often you'll use each function: a second outlet is the most flexible for everyday use.

What do kW ratings mean for electric showers and which cable size will you need?

The kW rating indicates how much power the shower uses and affects the electrical cable size you must have; 8.5kW needs 6mm² cable for runs up to 18m but 10mm² for 18–35m, while 9.0kW and above generally require 10mm². If your cable run is longer than 35m a qualified electrician should assess voltage drop and may recommend 16mm². Match the shower kW to your household supply and the correct cable to avoid poor performance and overheating.

Thermostatic, pressure‑stabilised, manual or microprocessor, which temperature control is best for you?

Thermostatic control is the most practical for daily family use because it mixes hot and cold to a set temperature and adjusts for changes in supply. Pressure‑stabilised valves help prevent sudden temperature spikes when someone uses a tap elsewhere, handy in busy homes. Manual valves are simple and inexpensive but need you to adjust hot and cold yourself, while microprocessor digital systems (used in many digital and smart showers) give exact temperature and flow control and often extra features like presets and app control.

Should you choose an exposed or concealed shower and which finishes are easiest to live with?

Concealed showers hide pipework for a clean, minimalist look and suit modern bathrooms where you want sleek lines; there are concealed options included in our range. Exposed showers show the valve and riser and are easier to retrofit or replace without opening walls, exposed models are available. For finishes, chrome is the most common and simple to keep looking good, black and brushed brass give a contemporary statement, and cool touch valves are a sensible choice if you have children or vulnerable users because the valve surface stays safe to touch.
