What tray size should you buy for your shower space?

Measure the floor area where the shower will sit and match the tray to the enclosure size you want, common sizes here include 1200 x 800mm, 1000 x 760mm and 1700 x 700mm. If you have a narrow length but plenty of depth, a 1700 x 700mm tray gives a comfortable walk-in without wasting floor space; for a compact ensuite a 900 x 760mm or 1000 x 700mm is a better fit. Allow a few millimetres for enclosure frames and tiling joins when you pick the final size.

How do the different materials compare and which is best for you?

Acrylic-capped ABS trays are lightweight, easy to manoeuvre and have a glossy, easy-clean surface, making them a good choice if you're fitting the tray yourself or have limited access. Acrylic-capped stone resin and Ducostone offer a heavier, more solid feel and a premium look but weigh more and cost a little extra. If you want a minimalist, slimline bathroom with straightforward handling, acrylic-capped ABS is usually the most practical option.

Will a low profile tray improve accessibility in my bathroom?

Yes, these low profile trays sit directly onto the floor and come in heights of around 40mm or 45mm, so they create a much smaller step-over than standard trays. That reduced threshold makes stepping in easier for everyone and looks cleaner in a modern bathroom. If you have underfloor piping or limited step height, the 40mm option can help keep the entry as low as possible.

Can these trays be trimmed to fit an awkward shape or pipes?

Many of the Podium acrylic-capped ABS trays can be cut to avoid awkward shapes, and their lighter weight makes on-site trimming and positioning easier than stone resin trays. You can trim small sections around pipework or irregular walls to achieve a snug fit; however, larger alterations may affect the tray's integrity, so minor cuts for trims and clearances are the typical use. For tight corners, selecting a size close to your final measurements reduces the need for cutting.

How good is the drainage and what should you expect from the waste?

These trays include a high-flow waste that sits neatly under your floorboards or tiles, so water clears quickly and you avoid puddling in a busy family bathroom. That high-flow design is especially useful with larger trays such as 1600 x 800mm or 1700 x 900mm, which have more surface to drain. If you want a shower for two or a powerful mixer, the high-flow waste helps keep water moving away efficiently.
