Shower Type

Electric Shower: Requires cold water only. Water is heated by an electrical heating element for hot water on demand.

Mixer Shower: Includes bar mixer, concealed mixer and exposed mixer. These showers require hot and cold feeds that are mixed and differ by installation style.

Digital Shower: Requires hot and cold feeds. Uses a digital thermostat for precise temperature and flow control.

Smart Shower: Same requirements as a digital shower, but with smartphone and smart home control.

Power Shower: Requires hot and cold feeds and includes an integrated pump to boost water pressure.

Shower Tower: Requires hot and cold feeds into a single tower unit. Includes luxuries such as body jets.

Outlets

1 Outlet: One shower head that's either fixed or attached to an adjustable riser rail.

2 Outlets: Two shower heads, one wall or ceiling mounted and one handset, that can be used independently or sometimes simultaneously.

3 Outlets: Three shower functions, typically a shower head, a handset, and an additional feature such as body jets or a bath filler, which can be operated separately or in combination.

Supply Type

High Pressure / Combi: These systems use a combination boiler which heats mains pressure water and sends it around your home.

Low Pressure / Gravity Fed: These systems usually use a cold water tank in the loft and a hot water cylinder in an airing cupboard.

Temperature Control

Manual: Must be independently supplied with hot and cold water feeds. Temperature and flow are controlled by the user.

Thermostatic: Mixes hot and cold water to selected temperature and adjusts to changes in pressure or temperature of the water supply.

Microprocessor: Commonly used in digital and smart showers. Automatically controls flow and temperature.

Pressure Stabilised: Keeps temperature and pressure consistent. Stops spikes when water is used by other appliances.

Cool Touch

Cool Touch: Specially designed shower valves that stay cool no matter the temperature of water. Ideal for children or vulnerable users.

Eco Shower

Eco Shower: includes clever water-saving features such as proximity sensors and eco modes.

Power (kW)

8.5kW: 6mm² cable size for ≤18m run. 10mm² cable size for 18-35m run.

9.0kW: 10mm² cable size.

9.5kW: 10mm² cable size.

9.7kW: 10mm² cable size.

10.5kW: 10mm² cable size.

For runs longer than 35m, a qualified electrician should assess voltage drop and possibly use 16mm² cable.

How do I decide between an electric Gainsborough shower and a mixer shower for my bathroom?

If you only have a cold feed or an older gravity system, an electric shower is simplest because it heats water on demand and works with all systems; Gainsborough Slim Duo and Slim Mono electric models are typical examples. If you have both hot and cold supplies from a combi or fed system and want a more powerful, stable flow or multiple outlets, a mixer (bar, concealed or exposed) will give better performance and extra features such as thermostatic control. Electric showers are compact and cost-effective; mixers offer more design choices and are better for rainfall heads or multiple outlets. Match the shower type to your water supply first, then pick the style and controls you prefer.

What kW rating should I choose for a Gainsborough electric shower and what cable sizes will I need?

Gainsborough electric showers are commonly offered in 8.5kW, 9.5kW and 10.5kW variants; higher kW gives stronger hot water flow but requires heavier wiring. an 8.5kW unit can use 6mm² cable for runs up to 18m and 10mm² for 18–35m, while 9.5kW and 10.5kW models typically need 10mm². If your unit will be more than 35m from the consumer unit, a qualified electrician should assess voltage drop. If you want a steady, hotter spray choose 9.5kW or above, provided your wiring can support it.

What's the difference between pressure stabilised and thermostatic Gainsborough showers, and which is better for a family home?

Thermostatic valves actively mix hot and cold to hold your chosen temperature and compensate for supply changes; pressure stabilised units work to keep both pressure and temperature consistent and prevent sudden spikes when someone uses water elsewhere. Gainsborough offers nine pressure-stabilised models and four thermostatic options, including dual-head bar mixers. For a busy family where taps or appliances are used during showers, pressure stabilised models give steadier performance; if precise temperature control (and scald protection) matters most, a thermostatic bar mixer is a good choice.

Are there Gainsborough showers designed to be safer for children or vulnerable users?

Yes,three Gainsborough models feature Cool Touch valves that keep the exposed parts of the shower cool, reducing burn risk for children and vulnerable users. Many of the thermostatic bar mixers included in our range (the Thermostatic Dual Head Bar Mixer in chrome) combine temperature regulation with cool-touch safety. Choosing a Cool Touch thermostatic bar mixer gives you both stable temperatures and a safer, cooler surface to touch.

I'd like a rainfall head plus a handset or body jets—what should I look for and will my system support them?

Look for models with multiple outlets; Gainsborough lists 2-outlet and 3-outlet options (some bar mixers and shower towers) and three products pair rainfall with a handset. To run a fixed rainfall head and handset or body jets you'll generally need hot and cold feeds (a mixer, digital or shower tower) rather than a single-feed electric unit. If your home has a combi/high-pressure system or you fit a power shower with an integrated pump, you'll get better flow through a rainfall head and any additional jets.
