Page 4 of 4 Electric Showers by Power Rating

Choosing the right electric shower power rating makes all the difference to your showering experience. Lower ratings like 7.5kW and 8.5kW are energy-efficient, ideal for households looking to save on running costs. A 9.5kW electric shower offers a stronger water flow for a more invigorating shower, while a 10.5kW model provides maximum performance, delivering the most powerful spray. Each option gives you hot water on demand, so you’ll never run out mid-shower. With trusted brands such as Mira, Triton, Aqualisa, Gainsborough, and Bristan, you can choose a model that suits both your needs and your bathroom style.

Shower Type

Electric Shower: Requires cold water only. Water is heated by an electrical heating element for hot water on demand.

Mixer Shower: Includes bar mixer, concealed mixer and exposed mixer. These showers require hot and cold feeds that are mixed and differ by installation style.

Digital Shower: Requires hot and cold feeds. Uses a digital thermostat for precise temperature and flow control.

Smart Shower: Same requirements as a digital shower, but with smartphone and smart home control.

Power Shower: Requires hot and cold feeds and includes an integrated pump to boost water pressure.

Shower Tower: Requires hot and cold feeds into a single tower unit. Includes luxuries such as body jets.

Outlets

1 Outlet: One shower head that's either fixed or attached to an adjustable riser rail.

2 Outlets: Two shower heads, one wall or ceiling mounted and one handset, that can be used independently or sometimes simultaneously.

3 Outlets: Three shower functions, typically a shower head, a handset, and an additional feature such as body jets or a bath filler, which can be operated separately or in combination.

Power (kW)

8.5kW: 6mm² cable size for ≤18m run. 10mm² cable size for 18-35m run.

9.0kW: 10mm² cable size.

9.5kW: 10mm² cable size.

9.7kW: 10mm² cable size.

10.5kW: 10mm² cable size.

For runs longer than 35m, a qualified electrician should assess voltage drop and possibly use 16mm² cable.

Temperature Control

Manual: Must be independently supplied with hot and cold water feeds. Temperature and flow are controlled by the user.

Thermostatic: Mixes hot and cold water to selected temperature and adjusts to changes in pressure or temperature of the water supply.

How do I choose the right power rating (kW) for my electric shower?

Lower ratings such as 7.5kW and 8.5kW use less electricity and are more energy-efficient, making them a good fit if you want lower running costs or have moderate mains pressure. A 9.5kW model gives noticeably stronger flow for a more invigorating shower and is a common mid-point if you want better performance without the largest electrical demand. If you need the most powerful spray, in a larger shower enclosure or if you like very high flow, a 10.5kW unit provides maximum performance. Pick a rating that matches your desired flow and the capacity of your consumer unit and wiring (see cable requirements), and consider pumped options if your supply pressure is low.

What electrical cable size will I need for each power rating?

For 8.5kW, a 6mm² cable is acceptable for up to an 18m run, but if the run is 18–35m you should use 10mm². Ratings of around 9.0kW, 9.5kW, 9.7kW and 10.5kW generally require a 10mm² cable. If the shower will be more than 35m from the consumer unit, a qualified electrician should check for voltage drop and you may need 16mm². a 9.5kW shower 20 metres from the fuse box will normally use 10mm² cable.

Which temperature control type should I look for — manual, thermostatic, microprocessor or pressure stabilised?

Manual controls are the simplest but need independent hot and cold feeds and give you direct control over temperature and flow. Thermostatic models actively mix to your chosen temperature and compensate for supply changes, so they're great if others in the house use water while you shower. Microprocessor control is found in digital and smart showers and gives precise, repeatable temperature and flow settings. Pressure-stabilised units are ideal if your supply pressure fluctuates, because they reduce temperature spikes when other appliances run; for a family home where taps and appliances are used frequently, thermostatic or pressure-stabilised makes the shower feel more consistent.

What do the different outlet options (1, 2 or 3 outlets) mean in practice?

One outlet is a single shower head, either fixed or on a riser rail, suitable for a standard enclosure. Two outlets usually mean a fixed head plus a handset, which can be used independently or sometimes together, dual-head (DuElec) models such as the Triton Amala DuElec let you switch between a ceiling or fixed spray and a handheld. Three outlets typically add a third function like body jets or a bath filler, useful if you want a multi-function spa-style shower. If you have a large walk-in shower, a dual-head setup gives the best flexibility: use the rainfall head for relaxing rinses and the handset for easy cleaning or rinsing hair.

How do I choose a finish and brand that suits my bathroom?

Look at the many finishes available, white and chrome are the most common and versatile, while matt black, brushed steel, gunmetal and two-tone looks such as matt black with brushed brass offer a contemporary statement. Brands like Triton, Mira and Aqualisa offer specific ranges and finishes, the Aqualisa eMotion comes in space grey and Arctic white, and the Triton Amala is available in matt black with brushed brass. Match the shower finish to your taps and accessories for a cohesive look, and pick chrome or white if you prefer a low-key, easy-to-coordinate choice.
