Shower Type

Electric Shower: Requires cold water only. Water is heated by an electrical heating element for hot water on demand.

Mixer Shower: Includes bar mixer, concealed mixer and exposed mixer. These showers require hot and cold feeds that are mixed and differ by installation style.

Digital Shower: Requires hot and cold feeds. Uses a digital thermostat for precise temperature and flow control.

Smart Shower: Same requirements as a digital shower, but with smartphone and smart home control.

Power Shower: Requires hot and cold feeds and includes an integrated pump to boost water pressure.

Shower Tower: Requires hot and cold feeds into a single tower unit. Includes luxuries such as body jets.

Outlets

1 Outlet: One shower head that's either fixed or attached to an adjustable riser rail.

2 Outlets: Two shower heads, one wall or ceiling mounted and one handset, that can be used independently or sometimes simultaneously.

3 Outlets: Three shower functions, typically a shower head, a handset, and an additional feature such as body jets or a bath filler, which can be operated separately or in combination.

Water Feed

Ceiling Fed: Ceiling fed showers use pipework that comes through your ceiling. They can be used with one or two shower heads.

Wall Fed: Wall fed showers use pipework that comes through the wall behind the shower. They can also be used with one or two shower heads and are easier to retrofit.

Supply Type

High Pressure / Combi: These systems use a combination boiler which heats mains pressure water and sends it around your home.

Low Pressure / Gravity Fed: These systems usually use a cold water tank in the loft and a hot water cylinder in an airing cupboard.

Temperature Control

Manual: Must be independently supplied with hot and cold water feeds. Temperature and flow are controlled by the user.

Thermostatic: Mixes hot and cold water to selected temperature and adjusts to changes in pressure or temperature of the water supply.

Microprocessor: Commonly used in digital and smart showers. Automatically controls flow and temperature.

Pressure Stabilised: Keeps temperature and pressure consistent. Stops spikes when water is used by other appliances.

Installation Type

Exposed: Pipework, showerheads, and controls are on display.

Concealed: Pipework is hidden behind the wall for a minimalistic look.

Stock Status

Cool Touch

Cool Touch: Specially designed shower valves that stay cool no matter the temperature of water. Ideal for children or vulnerable users.

Eco Shower

Eco Shower: includes clever water-saving features such as proximity sensors and eco modes.

Power (kW)

8.5kW: 6mm² cable size for ≤18m run. 10mm² cable size for 18-35m run.

9.0kW: 10mm² cable size.

9.5kW: 10mm² cable size.

9.7kW: 10mm² cable size.

10.5kW: 10mm² cable size.

For runs longer than 35m, a qualified electrician should assess voltage drop and possibly use 16mm² cable.

Which black shower type will work with my home water system — combi boiler, gravity tank or only cold water?

If you have a combi or mains-pressure boiler, look at high-pressure/Combi-compatible options — most of the range is marked HP/Combi and will give strong flow and work with digital, mixer or dual-head showers. If you have a gravity-fed low-pressure system you'll usually need a power shower with an integrated pump or specific low-pressure models; there are fewer of these but they're listed as LP / Gravity Fed. Electric showers only require a cold feed and heat on demand, so they suit properties without a hot feed but do check the power rating first. If a product is labelled "Suitable For All Systems" it avoids the guesswork.

How many outlets and what head types should I choose for my bathroom size and routine?

One outlet (a handset or fixed head) is ideal for small en-suites or where you want a compact riser rail. Two outlets commonly a rainfall head plus handset — suit family bathrooms where you want a luxurious ceiling or wall-mounted rain and the flexibility of a handset; many of the black showers are dual-outlet. Three outlets add body jets or a filler for a spa-style experience, which works best in larger wetrooms. For a low-profile look in a tight space pick a handset or wall-mounted rainfall; for a feature shower choose ceiling-fed rainfall plus a handset.

What's the difference between thermostatic, manual and digital temperature control, and do I need Cool Touch?

Thermostatic valves mix hot and cold and hold your chosen temperature, automatically adjusting for pressure changes — most black showers are thermostatic and suit families. Manual control gives simple on/off and flow adjustment but needs steady hot and cold feeds. Digital and smart showers use microprocessors for precise control and smartphone features, ideal if you want presets or remote control. Cool Touch valves, available on some models (marked as Cool Touch), keep the valve body cool to the touch and are worth choosing if you have children or vulnerable users.

I'm considering an electric black shower — what electrical power do I need and how do I choose the right kW?

Electric showers are rated in kW; common sizes here include 8.5kW, 9.5kW and 10.5kW. The site gives cable guidance: for an 8.5kW unit use 6mm² cable for runs up to 18m and 10mm² for 18–35m; most 9–10.5kW units require 10mm². Higher kW gives hotter, stronger flow but demands the correct cable, fuse and RCD protection, so match the kW to your incoming electrical capability and consult an electrician for runs over 35m.

How durable are black finishes and which finish hides watermarks or wear best?

Black finishes vary: matt black, black gloss, mirrored black and combinations with brushed brass are all offered, and each ages differently. Matt black hides fingerprints and soft scratches better than high gloss, while gloss and mirror black show water spots more readily but give a sleeker reflection. Wiping chrome-free black surfaces after use reduces limescale marks and keeps the finish even; for example a matt black dual-head bar mixer will look tidy day-to-day with a quick soft cloth wipe. Choose matt black for a low-maintenance, contemporary look and gloss if you prioritise a bold, reflective statement.
