How much space will a back to wall toilet really save compared with a regular close-coupled toilet?

A back to wall toilet saves space by hiding the cistern in a furniture unit or behind the wall, so the visible footprint is just the pan rather than a bulky cistern at the back. If you need to reduce projection, several models are available as short projection pans and compact pans such as the RAK 350mm compact pan, which are ideal for cloakrooms. In a small bathroom you could pair a short-projection D-shape pan with a slim unit to free up floor area while keeping a full-size seat comfort.

What's the difference between rimless and standard back to wall toilets, and which should you pick?

Rimless toilets have no hidden rim, so they rinse more evenly and are quicker to keep hygienic; standard-rim pans may be slightly cheaper and have a familiar flushing feel. If low maintenance and strong hygiene are priorities, rimless is a good choice; if you're budget-conscious or prefer a traditional flush pattern, a standard rim pan will do the job. Many rimless options here also come with soft-close seats, giving you both cleaner performance and quieter use.

Can you buy just the pan, or do most back to wall toilets come as a complete set?

If you already have a concealed cistern or a Geberit frame, buying a pan and seat lets you match shapes and projection without duplicating parts. For a replacement where you need everything, pick a complete toilet so the pan, seat and cistern are designed to work together.

Are any back to wall toilets suitable for taller users or for better accessibility?

Yes, there are comfort-height options available designed to sit higher than standard pans for easier standing and sitting. Most of the range is standard height, so if you need an easier transfer, look specifically for the comfort-height models and rimless seats with soft-close lids to reduce strain and noise.
