Are these panels made of real wood?

Most aren't solid timber, they're designed to give you a realistic wood look without the upkeep that real wood demands. The finishes recreate natural grain, knots, and texture, but the panels themselves are made from durable, waterproof materials, which is exactly why they hold up so well in busy or damp rooms. You get the warmth and character of wood with none of the warping, swelling, or sealing headaches.

Can I use wood-effect panels in a bathroom or kitchen?

Yes, and that's one of their biggest selling points. Because these panels have a fully waterproof finish, they handle steam, splashes, and humidity far better than real timber cladding would. They're a popular choice for feature walls behind a bath, in a hallway, or as a cosy backdrop in a bedroom or living room. If you're fitting them in a shower enclosure specifically, just double-check the individual product is rated for direct water contact, as decorative panels and full shower panels aren't always the same thing.

What's the difference between shiplap and slatted panels?

It comes down to the look you're after. Shiplap panels have a flat, horizontal-grooved finish that gives a clean, classic, coastal-cottage feel. Slatted panels have raised vertical battens (often on a felt or backing board) for a more contemporary, three-dimensional look and as a bonus, the slatted style can help soften echo and absorb a little sound in a room. Neither is "better"; it's really about whether you want crisp and traditional or textured and modern.

How are they fitted, and is it a DIY job?

For most decorative panels, it's very achievable as a DIY project. They're typically bonded to a clean, flat, dry wall with a strong grab adhesive, and many can be cut to size with a fine-tooth saw to fit around sockets, corners, and edges. Allow a little extra material for trimming, and use trims or end caps for a tidy finish. If your walls are uneven, it's worth battening first so everything sits flush.

How do I keep them looking good?

This is where they really shine compared to real wood. There's no oiling, sanding, or resealing. A wipe with a damp, soft cloth removes everyday dust and marks, and you can use a mild detergent for anything stubborn. Steer clear of abrasive pads or harsh chemicals, which can dull the finish over time. Looked after simply, they'll keep that fresh, just-fitted appearance for years.
