Small Baths - What do we mean by a "Small Bath"?

Baths come in all shapes and sizes but in the UK a standard bath is 1700mm long. Anything longer than that is considered to be a large bath and anything smaller is a small bath. It is possible to get Japanese style baths as short as 1050mm long but most people find they are just too small to give a relaxing bath. For most people, if a 1600mm or 1500mm bath will fit in their bathroom,  this gives a good compromise between finding a bath small enough to fit, but remaining large enough to be enjoyed. If you can't fit a 1500mm bath into your room then perhaps it's time to put in a large shower enclosure instead. Better to have a large luxury shower than a tiny bath that makes you feel like a sardine squashed into a can! 

How do I work out the right bath length and width for a small bathroom?

Start by measuring the clear floor space where the bath will sit, keeping room for the door swing and any sanitaryware opposite. Most small baths on offer come in lengths around 1500–1600mm and widths of 700–750mm, so a 1500 x 700mm bath will suit many compact layouts. If you have an especially tight space, look at 1400–1500mm options or 1200–1400mm models for very narrow rooms. A quick example: a 1500 x 700mm single-ended bath will usually leave enough circulation space in a 2.4m long bathroom.

I want a shower and a bath in a small bathroom, which bath shape is best?

L-shaped and P-shaped shower baths are designed specifically to give you a larger showering area while keeping overall length compact; L-shape models commonly appear at 1500–1600mm lengths with widths around 855mm. P-shape baths give an even wider showering area for more comfort, but they take up a little extra floor space. If you need a simple shower/bath combo in a tight space, a 1500mm L-shaped bath with an included screen is a practical choice that balances standing room and soaking space.

Should I go for a freestanding small bath or a built-in acrylic bath?

Freestanding baths, such as compact 1500 x 730mm or 1550 x 750mm models, give a strong style statement and are great if you want a showpiece in a small bathroom, but they need clearance on all exposed sides. Built-in acrylic baths are the most common option for small spaces because they slot into an alcove, work with side or side-and-end panels, and tend to be lighter and more affordable. If you want a traditional look without losing space, a compact freestanding roll-top can work in a slightly larger small bathroom; otherwise an acrylic alcove bath is the most space-efficient choice.

Which bath material keeps water warm and is easy to care for in a small bathroom?

Steel baths are good at retaining heat and are durable, but they are heavier and more costly to manoeuvre into a small room. Acrylic is the most plentiful option here; it warms quickly, is lightweight for easier handling, and resists staining, though it can scratch more easily. For a premium feel and excellent heat retention, mineral resin or copper options are available, but expect higher prices and greater weight. For most small bathrooms you’ll get the best balance with a quality acrylic bath.

When do you need side panels or side and end panels for small baths?

If your bath sits in an alcove you will need a side panel for the long run of the bath to hide the underside and pipework. Corner or L-shaped installations require a side and end panel set to cover both the long and short sides. Freestanding baths do not use panels at all, so choose none if the bath will be exposed on every side. a 1600 x 700mm alcove bath should be ordered with a side panel, whereas a 1500 x 855mm L-shaped shower bath needs side and end panels.
