Shower Handset Modes.

Shower handsets often come with multiple modes or spray patterns. A shower handset might be described as a 1 mode handset or a 3 mode handset, etc. This means that the shower head has a variety of water spray patterns that you can choose from. If you like a fierce shower then you can focus the flow into a smaller number of holes and this will give you a more forceful shower. Alternatively, if you have sensitive skin you may want a setting that gives a finer mist effect. Some shower handsets also have an Eco or environmental mode that uses less water by pulling in air and mixing it with the water. You can see this in action in the video below:

How do I choose the right head size and shape for my shower?

Think about the space you have and the coverage you want, heads under 100mm suit small enclosures and hand-held use, while 105–120mm heads give noticeably more spray area for a fuller rinse. Shape affects spray pattern and style: pencil-style round or square handsets give a focused jet and suit modern minimalist looks, whereas wider round or 120mm heads provide a gentler, more enveloping spray. If you have a small alcove or a single-function mixer, a 90–100mm handset is practical; for an open walk-in shower you might prefer a 105–120mm handset for better coverage.

How many spray modes do I need and what will they feel like?

Single-spray handsets give a steady, simple jet and work well if you want straightforward performance or are on a budget. Two to three modes typically combine an everyday spray with a massage or economy setting; four and five mode heads add more variety like rain, massage, and eco settings so you can switch for relaxation or water saving. a 3-jet hansgrohe Pulsify will let you alternate between a soft Rain-like spray and a concentrated massage stream, useful if you want both gentle rinsing and a stronger rinse for shampoo.

Which finish should I choose so the handset matches my bathroom?

Yes, several manufacturers offer Eco or EcoSmart models that reduce flow while maintaining spray feel; hansgrohe and some Pulsify variants are specifically labelled with Eco or EcoSmart features. Those models often balance reduced litres per minute with engineered nozzle patterns so you still get good coverage, and they can cut your water use without a harsh drop in comfort. Can you buy a handset that comes with everything you need, or do you only need the head?

Many handsets are sold as just the head, but there are plenty of bundle options that include a hose and holder, the hansgrohe Rainfinity set includes a 1.25m hose and holder, and some Mira models are supplied with hoses. If you want a simple swap-out and don't want to match threads, look for products described as "universal" or that explicitly include a hose; Triton and several Mira handsets are marketed as universal.
