What are freestanding bath taps?

Freestanding bath taps look stunning and can add a luxury touch to any bathroom. Freestanding bath taps work in tandem with freestanding baths, most of which aren’t designed to accommodate tap holes, so you can place them almost anywhere. This means that you have much more flexibility when choosing where to position your bath as well as the location of your taps.

How much space do you need for freestanding bath taps?

There isn’t a hard and fast rule of thumb for the amount of space for freestanding bath taps. When choosing the position for your taps, make sure it won’t inconvenience you or anyone else using the bathroom by being in the way or too close to other fixtures. 

Freestanding baths and taps can be fitted in a small or large bathroom, so as long as you plan it out.

How to install freestanding bath taps

First, you must ensure the water supply is switched off at the stopcock before beginning any DIY work.

To fit your freestanding taps, you will need to mark out the position for them on your floorboards. Make sure they are the right distance from the bath, allowing for both easy access when using or cleaning and ensuring the water misses hitting the bath edge or lip. 

Next, you will need to drill holes in the marked areas for the supply pipes. Lift the floorboards to allow for the pipework to reach the spot where your taps will be positioned. 

Once you’ve done this, test the pipes for leaks before the floorboards are put back. A plumber will be able to talk you through all the different steps that take place for connecting the pipes, as well as the remaining process for a freestanding bath, should you need to make easy repairs in future.

How can you tell if a freestanding bath tap will work with your home's water pressure?

Look for the pressure rating in the product details or use the filters, our range includes taps marked Suitable for All Systems, Low (0.1–0.4 bar) and Medium (0.5–0.9 bar). If you have a gravity-fed or older system, choose a model explicitly marked Low or Suitable for All Systems. A mains-pressure combi boiler will run any of the medium or all‑systems taps without issue.

Do freestanding bath shower mixer taps come with a hand shower or hose kit?

Many of the bath shower mixer models include a hand shower, and several products in our range explicitly say "with kit" to show the handset and hose are supplied. If the product title doesn't say "with kit", check the product description or images to confirm what's included. the Aquari Contour and Curvo ranges are shown with kit versions so you get the handset and fittings together.

Which finish should you choose to balance style and maintenance?

Chrome gives a classic high‑gloss look and wipes clean easily, while brushed finishes, brass, bronze or pewter, hide fingerprints and light watermarks, making them low‑maintenance for a busy bathroom. Matt black is very modern and dramatic but can show limescale on hard water, so you may need slightly more regular descaling. Pick a finish that complements your bath and existing brassware: brushed brass warms a neutral scheme, chrome keeps things bright.

What tap control and style will suit different bathroom designs?

Single lever taps offer sleek, easy temperature and flow control and suit contemporary schemes; cross‑head controls give an authentic period look. For a sculptural modern statement, consider waterfall or square profiles; choose rounded modern shapes if you want softer, minimalist lines. a waterfall Dakota model creates a spa‑like focal point next to a contemporary freestanding tub.

How do you make sure the tap height and spout reach will work with your freestanding bath?

Measure from your finished floor to the top edge and inner bowl of the bath, then compare those figures to the tap's overall height and spout reach in the product specification. You want the spout to deliver water well inside the bath without splashing the rim, and the tap to clear the bath rim comfortably. If your bath is deep with a small rim, pick a taller tap or one with a longer spout reach so the water lands centrally.
