How do I know if a D-shaped toilet seat will fit my pan rather than an oval seat?

A D-shaped seat suits pans with a flat or squared front, where the front edge is straight rather than fully rounded. Look at your pan from above: if the bowl narrows to a straight edge, a D-shape will sit neatly without overhang. Most of the stock here are D-shape so if your pan is squared you’ll find many matching styles in white, black or wood finishes. If you have a fully rounded rim you’d be better with an oval seat instead.

How should I measure the hinge hole centres so I buy a seat that will fit?

Measure the distance centre to centre between the two fixing holes on your pan, using a ruler or tape measure with the lid up. Match that number to the product’s hole-centre range, many seats here cover 101–150 mm, while others suit 51–100 mm or up to 201–250 mm. For example, if your holes measure 140 mm you should filter for seats listed 101–150 mm to ensure the hinges align. Also check whether the seat is top-fix or top-and-bottom-fix so it suits how your pan is mounted.

Which hinge type is best for cleaning and tight spaces: quick release, top fix or top-and-bottom fix?

Quick-release hinges are best if you want to lift the seat off regularly for thorough cleaning; there are nine quick-release options in the range. Top-fix seats let you secure the fittings from above, which is handy if you can’t reach under the pan, for example with a wall-hung toilet. Top-and-bottom-fix gives extra stability on some older pans but is much less common here, so you’d only need it for specific pan designs.

What are the pros and cons of plastic, moulded wood and urea seats so I can pick the right material?

Plastic (thermoset) seats are affordable, durable and easy to clean, the Croydex Eyre thermoset plastic is a good example. Moulded wood feels warmer and can suit traditional bathrooms; you’ll find oak and grey-oak wooden options if you want a natural look. Urea or urea-formaldehyde seats give a harder, more premium finish and resist staining; high-end sandwich-style seats from RAK Ceramics are pricier but very robust. Consider how the material feels to you, how you clean it and your budget, prices here range from around £18 to over £100 and guarantees are typically one to two years.

Can I get a soft-close seat and other features like a slim or family design?

Yes, soft-close hinges are very common across the range and prevent slamming, with models like the Affine and Ceramica soft-close seats prominently available. If you want a sleeker look there are slim D-shape options such as the Affine Slim, and family seats are offered too, for example the Croydex Family seat and the Ceramica Family oval. You can also combine features, for instance a soft-close, quick-release seat in a coloured finish such as black or grey, depending on the model you pick.
