How do I know which seat shape and size will match my toilet bowl?

Match the seat shape to the rim of your bowl, D-shape suits close-coupled, straight-front bowls, round works for compact or older pans, and oval fits elongated bowls. Measure the distance between the hinge centres (the hole centre width) and use the product ranges shown, such as 51–100 mm, 101–150 mm or 151–200 mm, to find compatible seats. If your hinge centres measure 160 mm and your bowl has a straight front, look for a D-shape seat listed for 151–200 mm.

Which material is best for a black toilet seat, moulded wood, urea, plastic or wood?

Urea and high-quality plastics are hard-wearing and give a smooth, hygienic finish, RAK Ceramics' Feeling seats use these for a glossy, durable look. Moulded wood and real wood feel warmer and more substantial, as with the Ceramica round wooden seat, but they can chip if knocked. If you want a sleek, modern black finish for a contemporary bathroom choose urea; if you prefer a warmer, tactile feel go for moulded wood.

Is it worth paying more for a soft-close toilet seat?

Yes if you want quieter use and less wear on hinges; six of the nine black seats here include soft-close to prevent slamming. The price increase can be modest, basic seats start around £16 while soft-close D-shape or slim models sit in the £44–£102 bracket. If you have children, light sleepers nearby or a designer bathroom, soft-close is a sensible upgrade.

What hinge type and material should I prioritise for a damp bathroom?

Look for stainless steel or chrome-plated hinges for corrosion resistance in a humid room, rather than plain plastic. If you want easier cleaning, select quick-release hinges so the seat detaches quickly; three of the seats offer that feature. Top-fix hinges are useful when access underneath the cistern is limited, as found on some Slim and Ultra-Fix ranges.

Should I buy a bidet-style seat or a standard black toilet seat?

A bidet seat, like the Geberit AquaClean Tuma Comfort in black glass, gives hygienic washing, heated seating and tech features but represents a major investment. Standard black seats, ranging from affordable Bemis models to premium RAK designs, deliver style and functionality with far lower cost. Choose a bidet if you want spa-like hygiene and are prepared to budget for electronics and an electrical point; otherwise a soft-close, durable standard seat will meet most needs.
