What is a shower mixer and how does it work?

A shower mixer is a valve that blends hot and cold water supplies together to deliver water at a comfortable temperature to your shower head. Unlike an electric shower that heats water on demand, a mixer shower relies on your home's hot water supply — either from a boiler or cylinder. Manual mixer showers let you set the temperature by turning a handle, while thermostatic mixers maintain a pre-set temperature automatically, even if the pressure in the supply fluctuates, offering a safer and more consistent showering experience.

What is the difference between a thermostatic and manual shower mixer?

A thermostatic shower mixer has a built-in temperature-regulating mechanism that holds the water at a preset temperature, compensating automatically for changes in hot or cold supply pressure. This makes it safer — particularly for households with children or elderly users — as it prevents scalding if someone flushes a toilet or runs a tap elsewhere in the house. A manual mixer requires you to manually adjust the hot/cold balance each time and does not self-regulate, meaning temperature can vary if pressure changes elsewhere in the plumbing.

What water pressure is needed for a shower mixer to work properly?

Most shower mixers require a minimum dynamic water pressure of between 0.5 and 1 bar to function correctly, though thermostatic models often need at least 1 bar. If you have a gravity-fed hot water system with a cold water tank in the loft, your pressure may be relatively low — in this case, choose a shower rated for low-pressure use or consider installing a shower pump to boost performance. Always check the specification sheet for the minimum pressure requirements of the specific model you are considering.

Can a shower mixer be used with both a bath and a shower?

Yes — many shower mixer valves are designed for use over a bath and include a diverter function. When the diverter is set to the bath position, water flows through a bath spout to fill the bath; when switched to the shower position, water is redirected to the shower head. These are known as bath shower mixer valves and are a popular choice for combined bath-shower spaces. Always check the product listing to confirm whether a diverter or separate bath spout outlet is included.

Do Architeckt shower mixers come with a shower head included?

This varies by product. Some Architeckt shower mixer valves are sold as valve-only units, intended to be paired with a separately purchased shower kit (head, hose, and rail). Others may be sold as complete packages that include a handset and riser rail or overhead shower arm. Always check the product listing to confirm what is included, and if the valve is sold alone, browse our shower kits range to find a compatible and matching set of accessories.
