How do I match fan size and flow rate to the room I'm ventilating?

Look at the fan diameter and the flow-rate band to match the space, most stock items are 100 mm and commonly sit in the 20–30 L/s band, which is ideal for a toilet, small en-suite or cloakroom. Larger bathrooms, kitchens or rooms with powerful showers benefit from 150 mm models (about 10 included in our range) that frequently deliver much higher flow, often in the 61–70 L/s range. If you have a long duct run or need more power but limited wall space, some high-performance 100 mm models (the Airflow iCON 30) can give extra capacity. As a rule, use 100 mm for small rooms and 150 mm for larger wet rooms or kitchens, and check the exact L/s figure on the product page to be certain.

Which control type best prevents mould and lingering damp in a bathroom?

A humidistat combined with a timer is the most effective everyday option because the humidistat runs the fan automatically when moisture rises and the timer keeps it running for a set period after you leave. The range includes several humidistat & timer models, giving automatic, hands-free moisture control and less risk of forgetting to turn the fan off or on. Continuous-run fans are another strong choice if you want constant ventilation in a badly ventilated property. If you have mould problems, prioritise humidistat or continuous operation rather than a basic pull-cord model.

When should you opt for an in-line or shower extractor fan instead of a standard wall/ceiling unit?

Choose an in-line or shower extractor when you need a more powerful, quieter solution or when the fan must sit above the ceiling, our range specifically highlights inline shower extractor fans for above-ceiling installation. In-line mixed-flow units cope well with long duct runs and are often supplied as kits (the Airflow Aventa in-line shower fan with kit and light), so they’re a good fit for loft-mounted installations. For a small upstairs bathroom with a long run to the exterior, an in-line fan keeps noise down in the room while maintaining performance.

Are "silent" extractor fans noticeably quieter, and what noise level should you aim for?

Yes, our range groups “Silent” and “Simply Silent” ranges and the noise filters show bands from 10–20 dB up to 61–70 dB, so you can choose a genuinely quiet model. If the fan serves an en-suite or a bedroom-adjacent bathroom, aim for the 10–20 dB or low 21–30 dB bands; those are whisper-quiet and won’t disturb sleep. Expect quieter fans to cost a bit more, but they pay off when you want discreet operation next to living spaces.

Do extractor fans come with installation or fitting kits, and when do you need one?

Some do, but most don’t, the filter shows where an installation kit is included and 46 without, so always check the product details before you buy. You’ll need a kit if you’re creating a new exterior duct or replacing a fan where existing ducting and grille aren’t compatible; several models are sold specifically “with fitting kit” or “with kit and light” for convenience. the Xpelair Simply Silent models are available with a fitting kit option, and the Airflow Aventa in-line shower fan is offered as a kit that simplifies ceiling installations.
