How do I choose the right fan size and flow rate for my bathroom?

For most small bathrooms and cloakrooms a 100mm axial fan is the common choice, with many models offering flow rates around 21–25 litres per second which is adequate for typical use. If you have a larger family bathroom or an en suite with a shower you may prefer a 150mm model or a fan with a higher flow rate (some products list 30–75 l/s) to clear moisture faster. Match the flow rate to the room volume such as a small ensuite (2–3 m³) will be fine with a 100mm, whereas a larger bathroom (6–10 m³) benefits from the extra capacity of a larger fan. Also check noise and control type so the higher flow doesn't become disruptive.

Why choose an axial extractor fan rather than an inline fan?

Axial fans are designed to be mounted directly in an external wall, so they need much less power and are ideal when you only have a short duct run, typically no more than 2–3 metres. If your external wall is close to the bathroom an axial fan gives efficient removal with simpler installation and lower running costs. If you must run air through long ducts or several bends, an inline fan would be better, but for direct wall-to-outside ventilation axial is the simplest and most economical solution.

Which control type should I pick: timer, humidistat, continuous or motion sensor?

Pick a humidistat & timer model if you want automatic humidity control that runs until the room dries, great for family bathrooms with frequent showers. Continuous or continuous+timer units are useful if you prefer constant background ventilation to prevent mould, while motion-sensor fans are handy in cloakrooms or quick-use en suites where you want instant operation. Smart WiFi models give remote control and scheduling, but if you simply want low-maintenance humidity control the humidistat & timer combination is often the most practical.

How noisy are these axial fans and which models are best for a quiet bathroom?
