When installing new radiators in your home, they are a great way to improve your energy efficiency of your heating system whilst giving you more comfort. To make the most of your new radiator, you need to select the right radiator valve which is what will make your radiator perform to its best ability.

Radiator valves don’t come with your newly purchased radiator, so you can select the valve that best suits you as every home and lifestyle is unique. There are many to choose from with size, type and even style, so we’ve put together a guide to help you select the right valve for your radiator.

What does a radiator valve do?

Radiator valves enable you to control how much heat you want your radiator to give out, just like how you use your taps to control your water. Each radiator will have two valves – one that will control the amount of hot water that enters your radiator and the other (also known as the ‘lockshield valve’ balances the system by controlling how much heat comes out of your radiator.

To find which valve is the lockshield valve, it is generally covered with a plastic cap. This valve controls how much water flows out of your radiator and back into the pipework or stays inside your radiator. The lockshield valve is usually fixed to prevent you from turning it, as during installation your heating engineer will use it to balance your radiators. This means that the valve will be set to the correct setting to ensure an even distribution of water around all the radiators in your home, so they all heat up at similar speeds.

Types of radiator valves:

There are two different valves to choose from – Thermostatic or Manual. Some companies now also offer Smart Valves, which take your radiator to a whole new level!

Thermostatic:

Thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) give you much more control over your homes temperature as they have slightly more advanced features than a standard manual valve. Just like manual valves, you can personally set the valve to what temperature you’d like the room to be.

Inside the Thermostatic valve there is a piece of wax or liquid which ‘senses’ the temperature in your room. Once the temperature you have chosen gets reached, the valve will automatically shut off the hot water flow to your radiator to prevent it from getting any hotter. This enables the radiator to manage itself for the majority of the time, so you don’t need to worry about having to turn the valve off yourself- as it will do it for you to save you from wasting unnecessary heat and money.

Manual:

The most common type of radiator valve you can buy is a Manual valve. You can turn them up, down or completely off whether you want your room to be warmer or colder. When you turn the valve it adjusts how much hot water flows through your radiator, therefor giving you more or less heat.

Manual valves are very simple to use and are generally on the smaller size. As they are manual, you have to ensure that you remember to manually turn them off yourself when you don’t need them on, or you will be using unnecessary energy and wasting money on heat that you don’t need.

Smart Radiator Valves:

If you want to go to the next level of heat control, then a smart radiator valve is an excellent choice. Smart Thermostat valves connect to your WIFI or through a bluetooth option which then enables you to control your heating from your smartphone via an app you can download. This is an extremely accessible option as it prevents the need to bend down to reach the valve as you can control it comfortably and easily from your phone.

Do you need an angled valve or a straight valve?

Most radiators (single or double panel convector or compact) have a bottom opposite end connection, meaning they come out either side of the radiator at the bottom at a horizontal angle. Pipework comes out of the wall, which would mean that angled valves are needed to join the radiator to your pipework.

Newer style radiators sometimes have middle connection valves which are located at the bottom in the centre. This means that you won’t have your pipework or valves sticking out at the sides, saving important space. If your pipework comes out from your floor and your radiator has inlets at the back rather than the sides, straight valves would make a better choice.

Angled:

Angled Radiator Valves have a 90° bend, allowing you to connect your radiator to your pipework with the valve at an angle. These are the most popular choice as they work with pipework coming both out your wall or up from your floor.

Straight Radiator Valves have no bends, meaning that your water will flow straight up from the floor or along your wall into your radiator, giving a sleek straight-line appearance.

Traditional or modern designs:

Your Radiator valve doesn’t just have to be a piece of kit that controls your heat! How you want your radiator valve to look is completely personal preference, with many different designs and finishes you can choice a valve that will suit your radiator or home décor. Choose from classic white, polished chrome or contemporary black and grey matte finishes, we’re sure you’ll be able to find a valve that will finish off your radiator in style.

Which valve connection type do I need, angled, corner or straight?

Match the valve to how your pipework reaches the radiator. Angled valves are used when pipes come up from below or when a bottom inlet pipe comes from the wall; straight valves suit side-inlet radiators with pipework running along the wall or bottom inlets from the floor; corner valves are for side-inlet radiators where the pipework comes from the wall or bottom inlets running along the wall. a towel radiator with wall pipes running horizontally usually takes corner valves, while a radiator with floor pipes needs straight valves.

Should I buy a thermostatic, manual or smart radiator valve?

Thermostatic valves are the most practical for everyday use because they automatically control room temperature at the radiator and help lower heating bills. Manual valves are simple and cheaper if you only need on/off or basic flow control. Smart valves (a small selection) add remote scheduling and zone control, useful if you want app control or integration with a smart heating system, but they are higher cost, the Worcester Bosch smart valve shown.

What connection size is most common and how do I know which to pick?

The 15mm connection is the most common size here, so many modern radiators and valves use 15mm fittings. There are also smaller sizes like 8mm and 10mm, a couple of 1/2 inch options and larger fittings included in our range, so check the valve spec against your pipework size. If you have a DuraTherm or Solaro valve you'll most likely find a 15mm option that fits standard radiators.

How do I match the valve finish and style to my radiator and room?

Pick a finish that complements your radiator and décor: chrome and white are versatile and plentiful, brushed brass and antique brass suit traditional or statement radiators, while anthracite and black give a contemporary, pared-back look. There are modern and traditional styles available, plus decorative options such as wooden-head thermostatic valves for a classic bathroom. a white column radiator looks seamless with white valves, whereas a brushed brass valve lifts a brass towel radiator as a design feature.

What is a lockshield and do I need a valve pack that includes one?

A lockshield is the control fitted on the opposite side of the radiator to balance flow and set the radiator's maximum output, and many valve packs include it. If you are replacing both ends of a radiator it's convenient to buy a pack with a lockshield so finishes and connection sizes match. If you only need to replace the thermostatic or manual valve on one side, opt for a single valve without the lockshield.
