How do electric towel rails work?

Electric towel rails are run using your home's mains electricity, which, compared to standard heating, could potentially save you a considerable amount of money.

Like lighting or an extractor fan, electric heaters come with a simple on-off switch, allowing for the heat to be instant and on-demand.

This is particularly useful compared to conventional radiators where you may have to wait for it to warm-up or heat the room prior to using it - which is wasteful and potentially expensive.

 

What fluid is in an electric towel rail?

As we’ve mentioned, an electric heated towel rail is a towel rail connected to and powered by your mains electricity supply. It does not get its heat from your central heating via copper piping and having hot water flow through it.

 

Will an electric towel rail heat my bathroom?

A towel rail will heat a bathroom efficiently as long as it's sized correctly for the space it’s in. A small heated rail is designed for hand towels and is unlikely to make much of a difference to the temperature of your bathroom in winter. 

However, a full-sized towel rail would remove the need for an additional radiator. The main benefit of towel rails is their height. Compared to most radiators, they take up a lot less space horizontally because they can go from floor to ceiling.

  • Slide any shrouds out of the way and use a spanner to slightly loosen the element.
  • Stand the rail up to allow easy removal of the element and to stop any fluid from being lost.
  • (Remember that when the rail is installed again the element must be at the bottom of the rail!)
  • While the electric towel rail is standing the new element can be screwed in by hand then fully tightened with a spanner.
  • Check over the base of the element where it meets the rail to ensure nothing has been damaged. Pay particular attention to any seals being out of place! If these are not fitted correctly then you undoubtedly get a leak.
  • Fit back onto the wall and turn your electricity back on.
  • Switch on the new element to test for any leaks and to ensure heating around the rail is uniform and consistent.
