How do I work out the right size and heat output for my room?

Use the BTU Heating Calculator on the Plumbworld website to convert your room’s size, insulation and window area into the heat output you need; the result tells you the radiator kW or BTU to look for. If you have a large living room you might choose a double panel or wider horizontal radiator to reach that output, whereas a small bedroom often needs a single panel or compact vertical model. Always allow a little extra if the room is poorly insulated or has high ceilings. The calculator makes the choice quick and reliable.

Which radiator style suits a period home versus a modern interior?

For a period or traditional house, column radiators give an authentic, homely look and strong heat output, while flat panel or oval radiators suit clean, contemporary spaces. Designer radiators are ideal when you want a statement piece that doubles as décor, for example an anthracite vertical designer radiator in a minimalist living room. Think about proportions: tall verticals save wall length, and horizontals work under windows.

Can I have a radiator in my bathroom or kitchen, and what types work best there?

Yes, towel radiators are specifically made for bathrooms and kitchens because they heat the room and dry towels, while mirror radiators combine a mirror with heating for a practical shower-room solution. Choose bathroom-rated models or those specified for wet areas, and consider a slim tall towel radiator if space beside a basin or shower is limited. A compact kitchen radiator or low-surface-temperature model keeps surfaces safe and unobtrusive.

Should I choose central-heating, electric, oil-filled or aluminium radiators?

Central heating radiators plug into your hot water system and are standard for whole house heating, while electric and smart electric radiators are great where you lack a central system or want zonal control; smart units let you schedule and save energy. Oil-filled radiators release gentle, long-lasting heat and are useful for bedrooms or occasional rooms, and aluminium radiators warm up quickly and are lightweight, which are ideal for rapid heat in living spaces. Match the type to how and when you want heat: fast response, long residual warmth, or independent electric control.

What valves, covers and finishes will complete the look and performance?

Radiator valves are a small detail that affects both function and style. Thermostatic valves give room-by-room control, while manual valves keep things simple. Radiator covers hide the unit for a neat look and can be matched to your decor; for example, a white flat panel with a white cover blends into a minimalist kitchen. Colour choices such as black, grey, anthracite or white let you make the radiator a subtle backdrop or a statement feature.
