What Should I Look for when Buying a Radiator?

When buying a radiator, there are several factors to consider before making a purchase. From heat output, through to design and materials, we’ll go into detail about what it is that you need to look for when making a purchase so you can buy the best radiator for your home. Buying a Radiator

Buying a radiator can be confusing for many, with a whole variety of questions to consider - what are the radiator types? What size radiator do I need? Where to put a radiator? It can be fairly stressful.

So, to help you get to the bottom of what you need for your home, we, at Plumbworld, have put together this informative guide to narrow down the choices available to you.

With this guide we’ll help you work out exactly what type of radiator you need so drowning in the choices available won’t be an option. We’ll cover the different styles available, how they’re powered, understanding heat outputs, where to install them, sizes, materials, valves and more.

Radiator Types and their Fuel Types Explained

Designer Radiators

Panel radiators

These are the bread and butter of the radiator world, being installed in most homes across the country due to their affordability and efficiency. 

They plumb straight into your central heating system and can be controlled via the thermostat at home or a thermostatic valve on the radiator itself. When it comes to a variation on size and heat output, then, these are the clear winners with anything from a 300x400mm size for smaller rooms right up to 700x1400mm for anything really big. 

They can be purchased with multiple panels and convectors too, boosting the heat output without losing wall space.

Designer radiators

For something a bit more unique, you should consider installing a designer radiator into your home for a stunning heating source. 

They’re stylish and come in contemporary or traditional designs to suit all types of decor. Like panel radiators, they plumb straight into your central heating system and can be set with a thermostat on the wall or the valve. A wide variety of sizes is also available with the added bonus of a choice of colours.

These are an excellent choice for rooms with limited wall space, thanks to their vertical design, making the most of their space and heat efficiency.

Heated towel rails

A heated towel rail is certainly more of a bathroom heat device than anything else. They can be purchased in three different fuel methods; central heating, dual fuel and electric. 

Central heating is controlled just like the above two radiators with the thermostat or the valve. Dual fuel-heated towel rails are plumbed into your heating system but also have an element allowing you to turn it on and off separate to your home’s heating. Electric-heated towel rails aren’t plumbed in but work solely from an element. 

They provide ample heat in your bathroom while keeping your towels toasty warm while you’re in the bath or shower.

Radiators Suitable for any Room

We’ve briefly covered this with the above section but let’s go into a little more detail on where you want to install your newly purchased radiator. Not all radiators will work in every room in your home, as there are various types of central heating radiators.

Bathroom

As mentioned previously we would always suggest something like a heated towel rail for installation within a bathroom. You can store towels on them, keep towels warm while your showering or in the bath and they’re available in a huge range of sizes and designs.

Most bathrooms are quite small so while the room itself may be quite cold with tiled walls and floors don’t go over the top when it comes to heat output. Small spaces can heat up surprisingly fast and with a dual fuel heated towel rail, you can heat the bathroom without heating the rest of your home. Otherwise, a small radiator here could be best.

Kitchen

Like the bathroom, your kitchen can feel a bit fresh at times with laminate or tiled floors, especially if you haven’t got the right sort of heating. 

You can get away with installing standard panel radiators in them, but we would always recommend a tall designer radiator because they provide more than enough heat without taking up much wall space. Plus, they look great!

Bedroom

You don’t tend to have many guests dropping into your bedroom so spending a lot of money on a designer radiator may not be the best option. Panel radiators will perform just as well and will seriously reduce your purchasing costs. They aren’t stylish but they perform faultlessly.

Lounge

The lounge, like the kitchen, is somewhere that you’ll entertain so unless you’re on a budget, we wouldn’t suggest panel radiators. Designer radiators can create a real focal point while still providing more than enough heat. You could even fit a couple of them to spread heat more evenly around the room

Utility Rooms

A utility is usually pretty small and tends to be where people store washing machines and tumble driers so don’t spend a fortune and don’t fit a huge radiator here. You’ll probably want the same heat output as a small bathroom.

Where to Fit a Radiator in a Room?

The position of a radiator in a room really depends on the type that you’ve purchased. A standard panel radiator is fine to be hidden away behind furniture like a sofa or bed but if you’ve picked out a designer number then you’ll more than likely want it on display.

Fitting panel radiators under a window is always a great way of making a room feel less cluttered, and a draught will be warmed before passing around the room. 

You could even fit vertical radiators on opposite sides of the room for perfectly even heating.

The size of radiator you need depends on two important factors.

The first is the temperature that you want to maintain in your chosen room - which is relatively straightforward.

The second factor can be more complicated, which is to take into account is the heat loss from your room. These can depend on the size of windows, the number of doors and, in particular, the construction materials used in your home.
