What is a Plinth Heater?

A plinth heater is a small, letterbox shaped heater that fits neatly into the bottom of your kitchen or utility counters. They are designed for those who don’t have the wall space for a bulky radiator, allowing you to maximise your kitchen space without sacrificing on heat. 

They work thanks to their large surface area, in the form of a grill. Boosted by an optional fan, they can deliver an instant high load of heat directly into your room quickly and efficiently. 

There are two types of plinth heaters available. These are:

The first of these is rather self-explanatory. An electric plinth heater plugs straight into a mains electricity supply, making them incredibly easy to set up. Heat is generated electrically while a fan circulates it around the room. The downside is, of course, that they will run off your electricity supply, which can make them more expensive to run. 

The second option is a hydronic plinth heater. These are plumbed into your central heating system, so work similarly to a radiator; they receive a flow of hot water which is then helped distributed into the room with a fan if required. While a hydronic plinth heater isn’t as quick to install as an electric version, they are usually more cost-effective to run, if you have a gas boiler. 

Are Plinth Heaters Expensive to Run?

The answer to this question depends on what type of plinth heater you buy. Electric plinth heaters are usually more expensive to run than hydronic heaters, as they run independently from their own source of electricity. As electricity generally has a higher cost per kilowatt, to run any heater with electricity usually costs more than gas.

Since most homes already have a gas boiler and radiator system set up, the running cost of adding a hydronic plinth heater won’t be excessive at all. However, be aware that some models do include an electric fan to help distribute the heat, which will add a small additional running cost when it is switched on. Are Plinth Heaters Noisy?

One question we hear a lot about plinth heaters is about how noisy they are. The sound being referred to is the noise made by the internal fan that helps push the heat into the room.

However, the amount of noise plinth heaters make generally shouldn’t be a cause for concern. We’ve heard many people describe the noise level as being similar to a fan oven or fridge operating - which shouldn’t be too bothersome in a kitchen! In fact, with a hydronic plinth heater, you don’t necessarily need to have the fan running constantly, so you can reduce the sound disturbance to zero!

Which Plinth Heater is Best?

How to Install a Plinth Heater

To install a plinth heater correctly, all instructions provided in the product manual must be followed. In most cases, installing a plinth heater is not a simple DIY job; hydronic plinth heaters will usually require a certified plumber to deal with the pipe and electric connections of the fan.

However, here are the steps that will usually be taken to install a hydronic plinth heater:

 

  • Cut an opening in the plinth. This will be at the bottom of your kitchen counters, below the doors. There will usually be some clearance space required around the heater to provide an airflow. It must be placed on a flat and stable surface. 

  • Fit the isolating valves. These might not be provided with your heater. The flexible hose pipes will then need to be connected from the heater to the central heating system. 

  • Connect electrics. Isolate the electricity supply. Plinth heaters are classed as a fixed appliance and electrical connection should be via a double pole 3A fused spur with a minimum contact gap of 3mm. 

  • Position the heater. Ensure no cables or hoses are kinked or snagged. 

  • Fix to the plinth. The grill can now be fixed into place on the plinth with screws.

  • Follow manufacturers instructions to complete the set up. Now that the heater is in place, you will need to adjust the settings as required.
