Page 3 of 3 Low Surface Temperature Radiators

Low surface temperature radiators, otherwise known as LST radiators, are designed for use when safety is a priority. While traditional radiators can reach up to between 60 and 80 degrees celsius, LST radiators do not get any hotter than 43 degrees celsius to the touch. Worried this will result in a colder room? Don’t be! While they do have a lower surface temperature, these radiators use convection heat to deliver an equally satisfying output.

LST Radiators at Plumbworld

Whatever the reason why you are looking for low surface temperature radiators, Plumbworld has a range that is sure to help you out. Easy to fit and install in many homes or commercial properties, we have a choice of sizes to suit your needs which all meet NHS surface temperature requirements. With our LST standard range, you also have the option of installing your own thermostatic radiator valve, adding further efficiency to your heating system. Perfect for busy areas where you don’t want to risk burns, shop low surface temperature radiators online at Plumbworld today.

Panel Configuration

Single: A single panel, often with one convector fin. Shortest projection designed for smaller rooms.

Double: Two parallel panels, often with one or two convector fins, designed for medium to large rooms.

Triple: Three parallel panels, often with multiple convector fins, to maximise heat output. Largest projection designed for larger rooms.

Will a low surface temperature (LST) radiator heat my room as well as a traditional radiator?

Yes. Although LST radiators are designed not to exceed 43°C to the touch, they still use convection heat to deliver the room output you need; you select the required output via size, panel type and convector fins. The catalogue shows BTU output bands from under 1,000 up to nearly 10,000 (Delta 50), so you can match an LST model to a small bedroom or a large living room. a compact 500 x 560mm Type 11 single panel suits smaller rooms, while a 650 x 1250mm Type 22 double panel gives substantially more output for bigger spaces.

How do I work out the right size or BTU for an LST radiator in my room?

Use the BTU output (Delta 50) shown on each product as your primary guide, and then choose a height and width that deliver that output, common heights here are 500, 650 and 800mm, and widths range from around 560mm up to over 2,000mm. our range's filters break outputs into useful bands (e.g. 1,000–1,999, 2,000–2,999, 3,000–3,999 BTU) so you can narrow options fast. If you need a moderate output for a standard bedroom, look in the 1,000–2,000 BTU band and a compact Type 11; for open-plan rooms aim higher and choose a double or triple panel in a wider model.

What's the difference between single, double and triple panel LST radiators and which should I pick?

Single panels have the shallowest projection and usually one convector fin, making them ideal for small rooms or tight spaces. Double panels (Type 22) have two parallel panels and extra convector fins for medium to large rooms, giving a higher BTU for the same wall length. Triple panels maximise heat output and projection, so pick them when you need maximum warmth from a compact wall run.

Can you use a thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) with these LST radiators?

Yes, the LST standard range specifically allows you to fit your own thermostatic radiator valve, which helps you control temperature and save energy by zoning. Fitting a TRV to, say, a Type 11 in a bedroom gives you independent control from the rest of the house, while leaving a communal area on a higher setting. Ensure the valve connection you buy matches the radiator model you select.

Where are LST radiators most useful and when would a vertical model be better?

LST radiators are aimed at spaces where safety matters most, nurseries, schools, care homes and busy corridors, because they meet NHS surface temperature requirements and stay below 43°C to the touch. Choose a vertical orientation when wall width is limited but you have height to spare; a tall vertical 1,850mm or similar model gives strong output without taking up horizontal wall space, ideal for narrow hallways or beside a shower room.
