How do I work out the right power (watts or BTU) for the room I want to heat?

A simple rule is to allow about 70–100W per square metre for a normally insulated room, so a 15m² living room typically needs roughly 1,050–1,500W (about 3,500–5,100 BTU). If your room is poorly insulated or has high ceilings, aim towards the higher end; for well-insulated rooms or bedrooms you can aim lower. Our range runs from around 1,000W models up to 3,000W plus, and has BTU bands (1000–1999, 2000–2999, 6000–6999). Use the wattage and BTU bands to match the calculation, and pick a slightly higher rating if you want faster warm-up or occasional use.

What are the practical differences between oil-filled, panel, ceramic and infrared electric radiators?

Oil-filled radiators hold heat and release it steadily, making them ideal for background heating and keeping a room warm after they switch off. Panel and convection heaters heat the air quickly and are usually slimmer, with panel options such as the Vent‑Axia and TCP giving fast response for living spaces or bathrooms. Ceramic and smart ceramic units combine efficient, rapid heat and often compact designs for bedrooms or smaller rooms. Infrared or 2‑in‑1 infrared-convection panels focus heat on people and objects rather than the whole air volume, which is useful for draughty zones or spot‑heating.

Should I choose a vertical or horizontal electric radiator for my space?

Choose a vertical radiator when floor space is limited or you have a narrow wall, many verticals come in heights of 1,600–1,800mm with slim widths (362–544mm) and powers from 1,000–2,000W. A horizontal radiator suits the typical run under a window or along a longer wall, and you'll find widths from a few hundred millimetres up to 2,000mm with matching outputs. Vertical models are also a modern, decorative statement in anthracite or black finishes, while horizontals remain the most practical for even room heat distribution.

Can I get electric radiators with smart controls or timers, and why would that help?

Yes, several ranges offer smart or programmable models, such as the Myson Rio Compact Plus smart oil-filled radiators and TCP Smart ceramic models, which provide precise temperature control and scheduling. Programming lets you heat only when you need to, warming the bathroom half an hour before you wake, which cuts running costs compared with leaving a heater on constantly. Smart control also maintains a steady comfort temperature and avoids overheating, which is more efficient and kinder to your energy bill.

How do I choose a finish or colour that suits my room, and will colour affect heat performance?

Pick a colour to match your décor, white is the most common and blends into traditional schemes, while anthracite and black give a contemporary, architectural look; brass or copper can act as a feature. Finishes such as matt anthracite aluminium look modern in minimalist bathrooms. Colour and finish are chiefly aesthetic on these modern electric radiators and won't meaningfully affect heat output, so choose what complements your room.
