The Benefits of Purchasing an Electric Fire

Easy to install

Incredibly easy to install in a matter of minutes; just plug into a 13 amp socket and switch on! Because electric fires do not require a chimney, flue, pipe-work, or even a fireplace, you can choose where to place it wherever you like in your home. Add a choice of suites and ready-to-fit surrounds and we have a fire to suit your décor and create a centrepiece in any room.

Easy to operate

Heat and flames are instantly available at the flick of a switch, but many electric fires also offer a handy remote control, so you can adjust both heating and ‘flame’ effects from the comfort of your sofa. And when you set a room to a comfortable temperature, fires with room-sensing thermostat technology will constantly measure the ambient temperature and adjust the heating to eliminate inefficient and uncomfortable 'room temperature swing'. So minimum effort, and with no unnecessary heat produced, which also helps save you money.

Energy efficient

All electric fires are efficient at point of use, so no heat is wasted helping to reduce your carbon emissions. And because they work independently of the heating, you can enjoy the relaxing effect of the ‘flames’ all year round, adding ambience without overheating the room on mild evenings or when the central heating is on.

With LED bulbs the cost of running a fire in ‘flames’ only setting can be as little as £2 per year. The predicted life of these LED bulbs is 100,000 hours or almost 55 years of use. *

Which style of electric fire should you pick — wall‑mounted, inset, freestanding or hole‑in‑the‑wall?

Match the style to the space you have and the look you want. Pick a wall‑mounted fire if you want a slim, space‑saving focal point above a media unit or in a hallway; freestanding stoves suit traditional rooms or rooms without a fireplace opening; inset models are ideal if you have an existing recess or want a built‑in look; and hole‑in‑the‑wall fires give a sleek, contemporary statement in a modern lounge. a 2kW freestanding Dimplex stove works well on a hearth in a cottage, whereas the Dimplex Ignite 74 hole‑in‑the‑wall gives a dramatic, flush finish for a contemporary living room.

How much heat will these electric fires provide and what room size will a 1.8–2kW model warm?

Most models in our range deliver around 1.1–2kW, which is suitable for small to medium rooms, typically up to about 20–25 m² in a well‑insulated space. If your room is larger or open‑plan you might prefer a higher‑output model such as the Be Modern Hereford with around 4.5kW. Remember that insulation, ceiling height and whether the area is open‑plan affect performance, so a 2kW stove like the Dimplex Bari will be cosy in a standard sitting room but may struggle to heat a large kitchen‑diner.

How do I choose the right fuel bed and flame effect for my décor?

Let the room’s style guide you, log and coal fuel beds suit traditional or cottage looks, while pebbles or minimalist beds work with modern, hole‑in‑the‑wall designs. Many models offer Optiflame or Optimyst effects so you can get a realistic flame with or without heat; the Dimplex Bayport Optimyst creates a misty, 3D flame that looks very contemporary in a minimalist living room. If you want a classic hearth aesthetic, choose a log effect fire fronted in black or brushed steel.

Do you need a chimney or flue to fit an electric fire?

No, electric fires do not need a chimney or flue because they use an electric heating element and fan to circulate warm air and create the flame effect. That makes them a good choice for flats or rooms where installing a flue would be difficult. You will, however, need to check the product's depth and recess requirements for inset or hole‑in‑the‑wall models to ensure a neat fit.

Should you choose remote control, manual or both, and when does each make sense?

Remote control gives the greatest convenience, handy if the fire is mounted high on a wall or you like adjusting settings from the sofa; models such as the Be Modern Quattro and several Sureflame wall units offer remote operation. Manual controls are simple and reliable if the fire is easily reachable and you prefer a lower cost option. If you want flexibility, look for models with both remote and manual control so you have a backup if batteries run low.
