Will a freestanding electric fire actually heat my room, or is it just for looks?

If you have a larger open-plan space, choose a high-output model such as the Be Modern Hereford with 4.5 kW. Remember that these fires give instant local heat and work well as a cosy secondary source rather than as your sole heating in a large, poorly insulated home.

Which flame and fuel-bed option looks most realistic?

Log-effect and coal beds are the most lifelike on the range, giving the familiar shapes and ember glow of a real fire, while Optiflame delivers convincing LED flame depth at a mid price point. For an even more immersive effect, the Optimyst system (seen on the Dimplex Bayport) creates a misty, smoky flame that closely mimics real combustion, but it is a pricier option. If you want great looks on a budget, a log-effect stove with Optiflame gives a warm, authentic ambience without the extra cost of steam technology.

How do I choose the right size freestanding fire for my space?

Use the product range dimensions as a guide: widths span about 300–700 mm, heights 400–700 mm and depths 100–500 mm, so measure the floor area where you want the unit and allow room for circulation. For a small alcove or bedside nook, a microstove around 1.2 kW and compact depth is ideal; for a fireplace replacement in a lounge, a mid-width 2 kW stove usually fits neatly and looks proportionate.
