How do I choose between angled, corner and straight radiator valves for my pipework?

Match the valve type to how your pipes reach the radiator. Angled valves suit side inlet radiators with pipework coming from below or bottom inlet radiators with pipework coming from the wall. Corner valves are for side inlet radiators with pipework coming from the wall or bottom inlets with pipework running along the wall. Straight valves work when pipework runs along the wall to a side inlet, or when pipes come up from the floor into a bottom inlet.

Should I buy manual or thermostatic radiator valves?

Thermostatic valves give you automatic temperature control and greater energy efficiency and are common here, with thermostatic options available alongside 11 manual types. Choose a thermostatic valve for living rooms and bedrooms where you want consistent control, and a manual valve if you prefer a simple on/off control or a traditional look. For towel radiators you can buy thermostatic dual fuel options so you can control heat electrically when the central heating is off.

Do I need a lockshield and what does it do?

A lockshield lets you balance your heating system so each radiator gets the right flow, which improves performance across the house. Some valve packs include a lockshield, roughly half of the range list lockshield included, so you can fit both control and balancing valves together. If you want a neat matching finish and easier commissioning, pick a pack that includes the lockshield, such as the Solaro or Towelrads packs.

Will matt black valves suit my radiator and décor, and are there other colour choices?

Matt black is the dominant finish here and works well to contrast light tiles or to blend with darker, contemporary schemes; you'll find matt black across Solaro, DuraTherm and Towelrads ranges. There are also a few alternatives, for example an anthracite cross-head and a grey option, if you want a subtler tone. If you have a traditional radiator, look at the cross-head traditional styles; for modern rads choose the designer or contemporary shapes.

What connection size should I order?

Check the pipe diameter on your heating system first. Most valves in the range are 15mm, with 25 listings supporting that size, while only a couple of items use a 50mm connection. Standard domestic central heating pipework is usually 15mm, so that is the safest choice in most homes. For towel radiators with larger integrated fittings you may need specialised sets such as the Terma 50mm integrated masking valve.
