How do I know which wattage (1kW, 2kW or 3kW) will warm my room effectively?

Use a simple guide based on room size: a 1kW heater suits a small room or office up to about 8–10 m², a 2kW model is ideal for typical bedrooms or living rooms of 12–20 m², and a 3kW heater will cope with larger, open-plan spaces around 25–30 m². The range here includes 1kW (Consort), 2kW (Dimplex and Pifco) and a 3kW Dimplex option, so you can match power to room area. If your room is poorly insulated, choose the next size up; if it's very well insulated, the lower size will usually be sufficient.

What's the practical difference between a convector heater and a fan convector heater?

A plain convector warms the air by natural convection and gives quiet, gentle background heat, making it good for bedrooms or living rooms. Fan convectors use a fan to push warm air out quickly, so they heat a room faster but are a little noisier and can circulate dust. If you want rapid spot heating in an office or hallway choose a fan model; for calm, continuous comfort choose a convector.

Are any of these portable heaters suitable where low surface temperature is important, around children or vulnerable people?

Yes, the Consort 1kW model included in our range is an LST (low surface temperature) fan heater, designed so its external surfaces stay cooler and lower the burn risk. That makes it a sensible option in settings where safety is a priority, such as around children or care environments. You should still leave the recommended clearance space and follow the product's safety guidance, but LST gives an extra layer of protection.

I have limited space, how compact and flexible are these heaters for moving or mounting?

Most models are freestanding floor units, compact and lightweight for moving room to room, with widths in this range from about 540 mm up to 712 mm depending on model. Two of the six products in our range can be mounted on wall and floor, which saves floor space if you need that option. a slimline panel convector at 540–584 mm wide will tuck against a wall in a narrow study, while the larger 712 mm freestanding 3kW model suits a bigger living area.

Will built-in thermostats and timers on these heaters help reduce my running costs?

Yes. Models with thermostatic controls maintain a set temperature so the heater cycles on and off instead of running continuously, which cuts wasted energy. Several units here also offer multiple heat settings and at least one Pifco model includes a timer, letting you heat only when needed and avoid overheating an empty room. Using a 2kW heater with a thermostat set to a comfortable temperature is often more economical than running a higher setting all the time.
