Electric Stoves

Electric stoves may not seem the ideal choice for adding extra heating to your living space but they’re actually a lot more practical and efficient than you might think. They’re usually made from the exact same materials that wood burning or gas stoves are made from so you get the same high-quality look and feel. Electric stoves are also available in numbers shapes, sizes and finishes, possibly more than a traditional stove. They come with full on flame effects so you get the same cosy feeling, plus all the same heat with adjustable temperature settings to make sure you’re as comfortable as possible. Lastly, and possibly the biggest benefit is that all you need is a plug socket. There’s no flue required and certainly no chimney so it’s a case of fit it and start warming up!

How much heat will an electric stove give and what size room will it suit?

Electric stoves in our range range from around 1.8–2kW up to 4.5–5kW, so heat output varies with the model you pick. A 1.8–2kW stove, such as the Be Modern Colman or Elstow 2kW, is typically ideal for small to medium rooms or a snug living room. If you want to heat an open-plan living area, a higher-output model like the Be Modern Hereford 4.5kW will perform better. All models offer adjustable temperature settings so you can dial comfort up or down as needed.

Do electric stoves need a chimney or flue, and where can I place one in my home?

You only need a standard plug socket; there's no flue or chimney required, so these stoves can go almost anywhere with power. That makes them perfect for flats, cottages or rooms where a traditional chimney isn't available. You can choose freestanding versions to sit in front of a wall or inset models like the Hereford inset if you want a built‑in look in an existing fireplace opening. Just allow sensible clearance from combustibles and follow the manufacturer's positioning guidance.

How realistic are the flame effects and what options are there?

Flame realism varies by technology and finish, many models offer LED flame effects over a log bed for a cosy visual, while Dimplex's Optimyst (the Willowbrook) produces a deeper 3D flame and vapour effect for a very authentic glow. Some stoves are also described as having an "engine" or enhanced flame mechanism to improve movement and depth. If you want a true hearth atmosphere, an Optimyst style or a model with a detailed log bed will deliver the most convincing result.

Which style and finish should I choose to match my decor and how durable are the materials?

The range covers traditional cast‑iron style stoves and cleaner modern designs, with finishes from matt black to cream and French grey, the Dimplex Fullerton in matt cream or the Adam Woodhouse in black. Steel and cast‑iron style constructions are common, giving an authentic heavyweight look and strong durability; matt finishes hide fingerprints well in busy rooms. If you have a period fireplace, a cast‑iron style stove will feel at home; for a contemporary scheme, a sleek black or cream modern design will sit neatly.

How will the stove affect my energy use and running costs?

Running cost relates directly to the stove's kW rating: a 2kW model uses roughly 2 kWh of electricity per hour at full output, while a 4.5kW model uses about 4.5 kWh per hour. Using the adjustable thermostat and lower heat settings will cut consumption, so a lower‑kW model is cheaper to run for background warmth. Think about how you intend to use it, occasional mood heating with a 1.8–2kW stove will cost less than regularly heating a large open space with a 4.5–5kW unit.
