Which bowl configuration should I choose — single, 1.5, double or half bowl?

Think about how you work at the sink and the space you have: single bowls suit small or minimalist kitchens and give you a large uninterrupted bowl for washing big pans, while double bowls are best if you like to rinse in one bowl and soak in the other. A 1.5 bowl is a sensible compromise — a full bowl plus a smaller half bowl for prep or a draining area without needing more cupboard space. Half‑bowls are useful if you only need a small extra bowl for rinsing or food prep. For example, in a busy family kitchen a double bowl makes multitasking easier, but in a studio flat a single bowl gives maximum capacity in a tight cupboard.

Which material will work best for my kitchen — stainless steel, granite composite, ceramic or fireclay?

Stainless steel is hard‑wearing, economical and suits modern or utility kitchens; many stainless sinks come in shallow and deep options so you can match how you wash. Granite composite gives a matt, coloured finish (black, grey, white) that resists scratching and looks great with stone worktops. Ceramic and fireclay are heavier, more traditional and ideal for Belfast or apron‑front styles because they tolerate heat and staining well. Choose stainless steel if you want value and durability, granite composite for a designer coloured finish, and fireclay/ceramic if you want a classic look and don't mind the extra weight.

How do I decide between inset, undermount or an apron/Belfast sink?

Match the sink to your worktop and cabinet: inset sinks sit into a cut‑out and are straightforward with most laminate or timber tops, while undermounts are bonded beneath solid surfaces like granite or quartz for a seamless look and easier worktop cleaning. Apron or Belfast/Butler styles project slightly and suit traditional schemes where the sink is a feature. If you have a quartz worktop and want to wipe crumbs straight into the bowl, go undermount; if you have a standard laminate top, an inset sink is usually simpler and more cost‑effective.

What sink size and depth should I pick so it fits my base unit and handles pots?

Start with your base unit width: many sinks fall into the 500–599 mm range which fits a standard 600 mm kitchen base unit, while larger sinks are often 1000–1099 mm long for double bowls. Depths of 200–299 mm are common and are deep enough for large pans without being awkward to reach. If you have a 600 mm cabinet and wash big cookware, an inset single or 1.5 sink around 500–600 mm wide and ~220–250 mm deep is a practical choice. For two bowls, allow at least a 1000 mm run or choose a compact 1.5 bowl if you have less space.

Do I need a drainer and how do I pick left or right hand?

Think about where you'll place the dishwasher and prep area: sinks come without a drainer if you prefer draining racks, while many offer left‑or‑right reversible drainers so you can decide on site. If your dishwasher sits to the right, a right‑hand drainer or bowl on the left keeps washed items flowing straight to the dishwasher. There are smaller numbers of fixed left‑only ( and right‑only drainer sinks, so check orientation before you buy; for flexibility, a reversible drainer is the most forgiving choice.
